Then we come to the Ukraine vs Donbas separatist war where Russia has send some troops and Ukraine throws everything to take a small territory. Can anyone say the cost in armament, men and treasure is worth this strategically speaking for Ukr?

Depends on post-war western response. If they don't make a marshall-plan tier initiative to rebuild Ukrainian infrastructure and economy I would consider it pyyrhic.
the entire war has been a stalemate and in a few months we will see whether this will continue or ukraine claims victory. if they get rebuilt by europe and recapture everything but crimea it will be a victory, if no rebuild pyrrhic and so on

The reasoning was that Donbas was just a stepping stone to assert even more territorial claims on Ukraine. This fear was completely justified. Despite adopting a strategy of compromise with the rebels under Zelensky, Ukraine was attacked by Russia.
