I dunno about the kid, but the rotund leader is rather a classically masculine / commander look. Western cultures are more into the leaner muscle bod like Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar, Confucian-derived cultures go for the "general's stomach." It's supposed to look strong and powerful but also capable of laughing of criticism like HA HA HA while also forgiving failures from others.
