I think he's talking designwise rather than competitively.
If he's not, then I guess Extreme Evoboost and the fact that Magmar made it to top 8 in VGC 2013.
No clue about Electabuzz, though.
The boosts to every stat other than Attack were too minimal to make a difference.
+5 to each bulk stat doesn't even begin to compare to the Eviolite boost, and +5 speed is actually a detriment because it's a Trick room mon.
And it doesn't even use its SpAtk.
So in practice, the only benefit it got was a +30 to its Attack. Which is definitely good, but barely matters because they're more supportmons than anything and 100 base Attack really isn't anything to write home about.
Add in the fact that it doesn't get a type change, doesn't get an ability change, and the three (3) new moves it gets are Focus Blast, Darkest Lariat, and Laser Focus (and it didn't even get the latter 2 until gen 8).
Dusknoir was fine in gen 4 when it was a tiny upgrade to Dusclops, but that tiny upgrade doesn't even begin to compare to Eviolite.
More like what went wrong with Dusknoir.
Some of the gen 4 crossgen evos are so bad that they boggle the mind
Specifically Rhyperior. And Dusknoir. But mostly Rhyperior
rhyperior mechanically speaking is okay, solid rock helps
Don't speak shit about my Magmortar. My boy blasts enemies as he keeps eggs warm.
And yet Magmortar gets mag-mogged by Magmar.
viability wise Rhyperior is fine very good on trick room teams and solid without them
Dusclops > Dusknoir
Electabuzz > Electivire
Magmar > Magmortar
Eevee > Glaceon
Porygon Z = Porygon 2
Yanmega > Yanma
Tangrowth > Tangela
Mamoswine > Piloswine
Togekiss > Togetic
Magnezone > Magneton
Lickilicky > Lickitung
Leafeon > Eevee
Ambipom > Aipom
Gliscor > Gligar
Honchkrow > Murkrow
Mismagius > Misdreavus
Weavile > Sneasel
Probopass > Nosepass
Gallade > Kirlia
Roserade > Roselia
Frosslass > Snorunt
Still a terrible hitrate. 100% of evolutions should be better than their pre-evo.
can't agree with mamoswine or magnezone
>mamoswine gets rid of the eye fluff and looks like he's constantly seeing shit
>magnezones speed
>electabuzz and magmar
redpill me on this one

Doesn't have huge power
>monotype physical attacker whose best STAB move before gen 8 was fricking shadow punch

I think a ability to summon Trick Room would be great for Ol'Duskie, but i don't know much about the possible implications.
>tfw you love dusknoir
>what went right
Dusknoir is what went right ironically
Gen 5 introduced Eviolite and buffed NFE Pokemon
eviolite is overtuned
Well, how would you balance Eviolite?
Was a total bromon during my PLA playthrough. I used to not care for its design but it’s grown on me.
I hate both of these pieces of shit. Frick Dusclops with a STAB Knock-Off straight to the fricking face.
>gets iron fist
>gets mach punch
>gets drain punch
is he fixed?
It has shadow sneak and poltergeist. All it needs is enough attack so it can actually do cleanup, wall break or be a wincon
made for carrying deceased elder female spirits into heaven
