chocolate doesn't go off, It just separates and that's easily fixed by heating it up.

        yeah.
"If unopened and stored properly, dark chocolate lasts 2 years (from the day it was made). If opened, but still stored properly, the rule of thumb is one year. As for milk and white chocolate bars, the time available is cut in half. One year if unopened and stored properly, and 6-8 months if opened and stored properly."

Not OP, I have a good stockpile of chocolate too and I regularly eat chocolate 2-3 years after the date on the package, I ate chocolate from french rations 10 years after the date.
If stored in a cool environment, it doesn't even separate, or very slowly and retains its taste.

Cans also have an expiry date but experiments have been done showing that they're still good after 100 years.

How do they even test for that? Imagine being a baby scientist and picking out your control groups and work groups of canned food from day 1 of your life and just having to hope against hope you manage to live to 100 just to prove your thesis.

If I recall the government had put a bunch of cans in storage when canning was first being considered for storing military rations, to test for longevity. They tested them at regular intervals, and it was always the same result- unless physically damaged from the outside, they were still good.

My friend found and ate some 50-year-old chocolate. He said it had the consistency of chocolate but was more brittle and tasted like sawdust

Yeah you have to melt it down again. Also some of the contents slowly degrade after like 20 years.
The guy saying chocolate lasts 2 years is a moron, that's best before.

Stuff like chocolate is -very- shelf stable. There are a lot of foods that have best by dates that only exist because they have to print something that will store practically forever. Shit like rice or canned goods and such will basically last for far longer than any reasonable person will ever be able to keep them if stored right.

Why can't you people just stockpile guns and ammo like normal people? When Shit Hits the Fan a weapon and the means to use it is infinitely more valuable than whatever you've got horded. Its just gonna be one big battle royal, you will just take what you need from the dead.

        >When Shit Hits the Fan a weapon and the means to use it is infinitely more valuable than whatever you've got horded.

The most important things to have on hand in an emergency are shelter food and water. In no fricking way is having a gun more important than those 3 basic essentials. A gun will not feed you keep you hydrated or stop hypothermia. A gun is a very nice thing to have just in case but its a distant 4th in priority.

You can not eat your gun, you can only try to gain through conflict with your gun, against people who likely also have guns. If your plan is to just shoot people like a Black person, don't be surprised when you bleed out in front of someone's house like a Black person.

You are moronic. Posters above are also moronic, you, moreso. If you think SHTF means that the world is going to be a shootout you are mistaken. If you want to survive you need your basic needs covered, shelter, clothing, water, food, medicine in that order. You need to have a network of useful people and built a community around it. Time and time again, people show incredible solidarity in times of crisis. The only people who grab a gun first are predators and have a short life expectancy. Your gun is a tool for hunting. If you go around with your gun thinking you are protecting yourself you are most likely going to end p hurting yourself or someone else because you are a paranoid lunatic.

Firearms are for threatening people that would kill you (or do things they know you'd kill them over) if you didn't have guns.

            Anonymous

Yes, and if you have to leave your house to buy food and water when SHTF you're going to die faster than people that shelter in place and wait for your hungry starving moron ass to walk up to their front door, shoot you from a murderhole and loot your corpse.

After they put your corpse on a spike on their lawn they won't need any extra ammo.
