You gonna have to grit your teeth and go ahead and cut it down past the bottom of the split
better yet, get an angle grinder and cut off the top 3/4 inch of your thumb. It'll grow back and the nail will be normal after that
Alternatively increase the radius of the hole at the split.

I had fungus in my left toe nail. Was nearly entirely lifted off the nail bed. This stuff worked wonders. Albeit took a few months due to the severity of the fungal infection
At first I was going to say it does not look like it but when I looked closer I saw the "stains" fungus infections make when they get under the toe nail. yeah the dude likely has fungus which deforms and weakens the nail.

Biotin won't fix that, but the advice came from the right place. I've had one on my thumb for over four years, taken biotin for 3 of them. Got it from a coffee karafe very much like pic related.
Tried peeling undernail back, polish, hardener, glue... Still here, just have to keep the nail short.

Drill a hole at the split to minimize stress concentrations. Cheaper and safer than glue.
I recommend doing it with a pin vise

Likely none. I'd guess you slammed that finger and have a fricked up cuticle. It's probably gonna keep on splitting, even if you wait for the current split to grow out and flush-cut it. Got the same thing.

this is not a natural phenomenon, Ive tried splitting nails on purpose but they always grow back flush, you have an infection
So I've actually had experience with this. Had a nasty knife slash and it sliced my finger nail and all that. The way I delt with it after trying to just let it heal was I just clipped my nail all off. Had to suffer through it but I cut most of the nail off so It could all just grow back, kept it covered up for a few weeks and it was fine.
Just use cyanoacrylate glue like all the office grills use to fix their nail splits.

i have chewed my nails since i was 5 years old every day the worst i ever did was almost completely tear out my nail on my pinky to the point you could see all the flesh under the nail i had to keep it curled up in a fist for ~3 days until it would stop the searing stinging pain and yet i have never split my nail is this really how bad dysgenics has become ?

You gotta drill a hole at the end of the crack to prevent the split from continuing. It's honestly just common sense.
you could be a man and drill a hole yourself, or you could visit a professional. A nail specialist or beauty parlor might be good options, if you aren't afraid to be around women

Most probable cause is severe nutritional deficiencies and maybe a fungal infection, can't tell from pic. Most likely your zinc levels are in the toilet. You need to start eating better. If lazy take a lot of multivitamins, if not lazy start buying beets with the leaves on top, frozen spinach, and a red berry blend, cacao powder, nutritional yeast, and kombu seaweed. Make a small smoothie out of this every day and this will provide you with huge bioavailable loads of the basics. Also you can add powdered liver or just eat liver a few times a week. Also eggs every day. Being fat is going to make this worse as fat people are incapable of absorbing nutrition from food.
