Why do you need a gun for light and fun camping? Wyoming is beautiful and has no predators to worry about. You don't even need to tie your food up at night or lock up your beef jerky. I wouldn't even bother zipping up my tent actually.

Wyoming is a constitutional carry state and even if it weren't, nobody in casper including police gives a shit if you open carry the biggest 500 s&w you can find online.

      A bear typed this

First, what are the laws there? What are the self defense laws there? Lastly, conceal is better than open cause you don't want to draw attention. Something bigger than your Jframe with good capacity. A large handgun or a small rifle. Maybe even a shockwave style shotgun if you have one.

Wyoming is about as deep-based as it gets, so I'd suggest anything that tickles his fancy. Preferably a full size 10mm.

Does Casper have those things? There certainly aren't any moose. Wolves are b***h made. If a mountain lion attacks you it will probably jump on you from a tree so a gun won't help. Brown bears are serious business though.

It's more important to have something on you and accessible than to be carrying a hand cannon.
If you can keep it on you and ready, a 38 spl should do just fine. Being able to shoot accurately under duress is more important than anything, so be sure to practice.

I'd argue a handcannon is exactly what you can keep ready to go at all times. Shouldering a rifle or shotgun takes much longer than drawing a 4" redhawk.

Shotgun. I would recommend slugs. 12 gauge slugs *should* take down any big game in the US. Idk if they'll frick up a wendigo, goat man, or skinwalker, but it's your best bet.

The other thing you could do is use progressively more penetrative loads. I.e:

    >first shot birdshot
    >if that doesn"t work, next shot buck
    >if that doesn't work, the rest of your mag is slugs

That strategy is from home defense. Might not make sense innawoods though if you have a bear or skinwalker charging you.

      Anonymous

Why would you use birdshot for home defense?

Low penetration and supposedly just as damaging under 10 yards as buck. Idk. I don't use a shotgun for home defense - I've just heard that.

All this said anon, your gun should be a last resort for animal problems. The best thing you can do that will eliminate 99% of your animal troubles is to not be a dumbass. That means
      >no food, toothpaste, drinks other than water, or anything that might be remotely food-like in your tent - keep it in your car or in a bearbag up a tree
      >don't camp near a game trail
      >avoid low-hanging trees that could be hiding a cougar
      >if you do see a wild animal, do not panic, do not run - let it know you're there and make lots of noise and back away slowly - chances are they want nothing to do with you

I've been going innawoods for 25 years and never carried a gun - grantes I live in the Northeast and I would absolutely want a gun out West as a fail safe. But the fact is, even with wolves, bears, and shit, YOU are the baddest thing in the woods. YOU are the apex predator. As long as you're smart and don't do something dumb, you'll be fine.
