In an all-out nuclear exchange civilization as we know it will be wiped out. The places that escape the initial blast destruction and fallout exposure, will be set back to the 18th Century, struggling to reestablish steam based technology. Bandits and militias will enforce whatever whims with impunity. Probably half the surviving world will die in the following 10,years from disease, starvation, and exposure.
Special categories for India and China, they will have to slaughter a great portion of their survivors to have a chance for renewal.
tl;dr The Living will envy the Dead.

But it doesn't stop you from making smaller dams that are on human scales.
We've been making them for obscene lengths of human history, they aren't complicated.
The only major difference is these ones have windings of copper wires around magnets to make power.
The river in my own town has a small dam at the side of it.
You can, essentially, do this for the whole length of a river where the width is significant enough.
Can't do that with mega dams.
Both have advantages and disadvantages, but only one is possibly at human scales without advanced equipment.

You know they can rip wiring out of the fricking walls, off power lines and everything else, right?
You're speaking as if fricking society still exists when you are stating yourself that society will no longer exist.
You morons must be utterly confused if you learned that farmers can live entirely off the land without ever seeing a single unit of any currency ever.

Scandinavia is not going to be nuked much in case of ww3.
There would be little use in nuking Italy either, outside the US bases with nukes.
Russia most likely intend to win, so they will not nuke parts of Europe so the unnuked can be forced to rebuild Russia for the cheap price of not getting nuked.

Islands with no military presence and low populations. Bermuda is a british territory so you can communicate with them easily if you are Anglophone.

What kind of crops are you going to grow in Tierra del Fuego, which won't matter as you will starve to death trying to harvest a subsistence crop.

I lived in the Azores recently for 9 months, I can say with confidence it would be a good spot for SHTF getaway.

Sao Miguel in particular has a wealth of natural springs and fertile lands throughout the island. You can easily host a half dozen chickens, a small herd of cattle, a horse or two, a pig, a goat and a huge garden provided you have the land and knowledge.

I know how to do all of these things, since my family is from there and I’ve personally learned from people who have been working that land for decades, but I’m sure others can do it. If you’re from RHode Island or Massachusetts and have Portuguese ancestry, try to get a dual citizenship

I went and visited the mainland and went on a bike tour from Lisbon to Barcelona. I would say the best city was Porto, best beach was Foz do Arelho and best area was in the north near Geres.

And Azores is great for a week or two, you just have to get used to the weird (for you) accents. We don’t pronounce the O’s (obrigad) and have weird local words like leilao (mess). I would recommend Sao Miguel first and foremost, go to Vista do Rei and Ferraria thermal baths
