Yes, and France is mainly thinking about fighting light infantry in north africa, where wheeled vehicles makes a lot more sense, and will actually arrive in time to do something. Before a tracked mechanized brigade can move such distances that african country will have changed warlord three times.
Yes. Wheels are less maintenance and faster on a road...or inna deserts of Africa, where the French psuedo-colonies are currently being taken over by Wagner.
Wheels are easier to maintain and do long distance marches with which is why the French use them for the Sahel. Tracks are more compact for heavy vehicles+ofc tactical mobility.
because the main function of the French military is to shoot down thirdies. So they prioritise mobility and lower logistics footprint because you don't really need tracks in the savannah
No, it won't. That's the problem. Why do you think tracked vehicles are hauled around on flat cars and transporter trailers? Because going long distance isn't what they're best at. They can do it, sure, but then you have to rebuild the entire fricking thing, and why wear out your shit before you even put it into the field where it's needed?
HIMARS could do such a killing in '22 because they could literally clock 3000 km (1900miles) a week for literal months without needing overhauls. The first four units wouldn'5t have been nearly as effective if they hadn't been able to do that. Caesar was a similar story, the first few dozen were being moved huge distances to shore up firepower along the frontline.
It IS true that the froggies need(ed? they'll get back to it, no worries) to run around the huge expanse of africa, but they also design their shit to be compatible with a proper land war, and they like having a low maintenance footprint, because they are pretty fricking lean force. It's just how it is.
can someone explain why tracks need more maintenance and in general wheels vs tracks?
my understanding is that given the same vehicle but with tracks vs wheels:
>tracks have more friction and weight so higher fuel consumption >wheeled are faster bc of the above >tracks can fall out and immobilize the vehicle, but wheels can be blown by frag >tracks have lower ground pressure and more grip so better mobility on soft ground
>tracks can fall out and immobilize the vehicle, but wheels can be blown by frag
Vehicle with wheels, which loss one, or more weheels, or get punctured may still move.
>can someone explain why tracks need more maintenance and in general wheels vs tracks?
As a ex french soldier, I had the luck to choose between becoming a VAB pilot, or an EBG pilot ( engineer AMX 30 basically, pic related ).
I choose the VAB for multiple reason, the first one being able to get deployed more often and get money, and the second one, to not become a maintenance b***h.
See those track? There are 83 element, which weight 1.580 Kg ( 3483pounds ) in total.
Each element need a pin track to link them between each other, then you must put another element above it, so the pin track doesn't get the frick out.
Each element, each pin, each stuff that cover the pin, and each rubber element must often been change.
But wait, it's not finish! Once the track is put, you must loose the boogie to be able to put the track, and then tighten it!
but THEN, you must do maintenance! So you have to put grease inside each road wheels, both the upper one, both the lower one !
think it's over?! NOPE! the second, third and fourth road wheel are on torsion bar, but the first and fifth one are on hydraulic system, so you gotta check the whold hydraulic system!
YOU THINK IT'S OVER?! NOPE!
Frick It, on the VAB, I put the wheels, I put some air in the tire, and then some oil inside the wheel, then I check 5 different fluid level, and I just push the button to unleash 240 Dumb Soldier Power of it's engine and do some idiot thing which will lead my right away to my OF-5 officier, which will use it's divine power to punish me.
That say, some general had the idea to put Leclerc tank all along the mali/lybia border, with up to 4 or 5 KM between each tank, since their optic are so good...
Needless to say that the second that plan was told, the ministre des armées must have say something like "Mon général... C'est complètement con, changeons de sujet", which may translate as "Hon hon hon, My general, this is totally dumb, bring me some cheese back, and let's change the topic of our conversation"
also do you see the French army deploying anywhere in the near future?
will they do anything about the coups in their African territories and the Russian getting in there?
>got anything to tell on the foreign legion?
I'm going to go to the trials in the coming months, want to go 2rep or 2rei
Which regiment you'll end will depend of how high you end up in the rating with other recruits at the end of your three month initial formation.
First one get to choose, last one take what's left.
Also, if you're unlucky, there may be some time where this or that regiment doesn't recruit, because it's not the good time, but I think every FFL regiment recruit every time.
TLDR:
Learn french
be rustic
shut your mouth when someone yell at you or say "Oui, Caporal Chef/Sergent/Mon Lieutenant!"
be volonteer for antyhing they ask
be able to run 3 km in 12 min, do 50 real slow push up, at least 10 pull up
Told the truth to the gestapo
And you may end up where you want to go.
But be prepare to clean a lot of toilet.
>also do you see the French army deploying anywhere in the near future?
>will they do anything about the coups in their African territories and the Russian getting in there?
European theatre in the near futur, Romania/Poland/lituania/lettonia/Estiona.
for Africa, there are still deployment, but those are peace time one.
Also, MUH COLONIES is a myth, we only get deployed if countries officialy ask us to do so, if they don't, we don't move.
We're fed up throwing money at corrupted African countries which never were profitable.
If we help them, they cry "muh colonialism".
If we don't help them, they cry "Muh colonialism".
Guess what, the second choice doesn't involve throwing money, so we choose this one now, and frick it.
>Which regiment you'll end will depend of how high you end up in the rating with other recruits at the end of your three month initial formation. >First one get to choose, last one take what's left. >Also, if you're unlucky, there may be some time where this or that regiment doesn't recruit, because it's not the good time, but I think every FFL regiment recruit every time.
yeah I read how works
rn I can do 11 pull ups and 31 push ups, but before going I'm waiting some months so that ill get better and learn more french, i want to be among the best to do fut fut
>European theater
I dont think Russia will collapse the ukr frontline and arrive there, what are you referring to?
yeah dude I know theres NATO missions in eastern Europe but the way you framed it made it sound like a combat deployment against Russia, I dont care about peacetime deployments I meant chances to see combat.
fut fut means you go do the corporal course right after bootcamp instead of waiting 2 years for the promotion and its only available for the best cadets
>but the way you framed it made it sound like a combat deployment against Russia
Sorry if i framed it in the wrong way, what I wanted to say is it will indeed be peace time mission, unless Russia decided to invad a NATO country.
>I meant chances to see combat.
Currently? Zero, but hey,WW3 may not be so far, and we never know how and when SHTF in Africa, and come country will ask us tomorrow to go help them! Litteraly what happend in ivory cost... Mali... Niger... Ethiopa... Afghanistan...
>>fut fut means you go do the corporal course right after bootcamp instead of waiting 2 years for the promotion and its only available for the best cadets
Didn't know this one, good for you if you get it, but be able to speak French, and even more, try to know military term in advance, but don't ever praise yourselves with it, because there are always change each year, and you'll have to learn everything again.
Here's a very old version of what they give to new recruit.
Not recent at all, but it will give you the idea

Alors question:
>we only get deployed if countries officialy ask us to do so
Thats BS and you know it, when tou have (had) several state heads on what is basically a bribery payroll. In fact, the tactic is very similar to what Russia does.
but that is OK because you're doing it to Black folk. Literally who cares? We will all ignore it and you do you. Just be aware that everyone thinks this will end up badly for you in the long run, and while no one will hinder tou now, no one will help you with this in the future.
>Thats BS and you know it, when tou have (had) several state heads on what is basically a bribery payroll. In fact, the tactic is very similar to what Russia does.
That's bullshit, and I know it because I were in some of those countries, and even our chain of command and political figure told us so.
Africa is a fricking hell, remember that vids of a chinese trying to work with african men? This sum it up, it's a god damn money pit
Man that actually looks so good with tracks
Nothing wrong with the wheels. This looks like a single barreled shilka and therefore shit.
>Nothing wrong with the wheels
Mech>mot>airbone>airmobile>light. The predator feeds upon the prey. This is the great circle of life. Deal with it.
Yes, and France is mainly thinking about fighting light infantry in north africa, where wheeled vehicles makes a lot more sense, and will actually arrive in time to do something. Before a tracked mechanized brigade can move such distances that african country will have changed warlord three times.
much better wow
why do they insist on wheels?
Maintainence, Speed and Price.
are tracks really more expensive than wheels? its like they use them on the highway
Better for desert, where it is most likely to go
because the main function of the French military is to shoot down thirdies. So they prioritise mobility and lower logistics footprint because you don't really need tracks in the savannah
Tracked vehicles move just as fast as wheels...
I am yet to find a tank that does 70 mph...
just turn the governor off on any tracked vehicle and it'll do it
Yes, and you will have to replace a shitload of worn out things. That governor exists for a reson, otherwise it wouldnt be there.
it'll last for a war
No, it won't. That's the problem. Why do you think tracked vehicles are hauled around on flat cars and transporter trailers? Because going long distance isn't what they're best at. They can do it, sure, but then you have to rebuild the entire fricking thing, and why wear out your shit before you even put it into the field where it's needed?

That OP pic does look pretty sick though
You need rubber tracks to go really fast -and still accept high fuel consumption and wear-
Damn thats sexy but as other anons have said france uses its army to police africa and for international missions just like most euro countries
Isn't the entire point the wheels though?
can someone explain why tracks need more maintenance and in general wheels vs tracks?

Frick your track system, let me have my wheels.
Also, here's me, in my VAB, not giving a single frick, and just enjoying doing circle in the sand.
> in the sand.
How long would tracks lasts with all that sand?
Don't know, I'm a VAB pilot, not a tank one.
That say, some general had the idea to put Leclerc tank all along the mali/lybia border, with up to 4 or 5 KM between each tank, since their optic are so good...

been in any situations where you wished you had tracks instead of wheels?
>>if frogs were not autistic wheelies
You mean,
>>if frogs had enough money and logistics.
got anything to tell on the foreign legion?
I'm going to go to the trials in the coming months, want to go 2rep or 2rei
also do you see the French army deploying anywhere in the near future?

>I dont think Russia will collapse the ukr frontline and arrive there, what are you referring to?
We won't wait for a potential ukrainian frontline collapss to deploy some French army component near the russian border.
We were already deployed in Lithuania, right now in Romania, and we'll deploy more soldier along the russian border.

The Jaguar is such a gay vehicle
>What could have been
It's still not too late
They can stick turret on that small Turkish medium tank hull and make a good little fire support vehicle.
