P2000 9mm/40cal. Good gun with customisable grips. Ambidextrous as well if needed. External hammer is better than striker fire for weapon control and safety.
I'm going to include concealed carry as "normal self-defense."
Basically any semi-auto 9mm handgun that is capable of being easily concealed.
Avoid "full-size/duty-size" handguns like the Glock 17 or Beretta 92. Also avoid sub-compact/pocket guns. (They are easier to concealed, but more difficult to shoot)
Just going off what my LGS has in store a Glock 19, Smith and Wesson M&P Compact, Springfield XD, and SIG P365 would all be good choices. They're all relatively similar in price and common enough that you can easily find magazines, holsters, and information about them online.
Everyone has their favorites and everyone has a gripe about some particular gun. I'd go to the range, Rent a couple that you can afford, and pick one.

You want something small enough to carry conveniently (no good buying a gun if you don't have it on you when you need it) but large enough to shoot accurately and comfortably.

Going into the inner city alone and unfamiliar with its environment is dangerous.
Aside from a handgun, which should be your last resort, you should practice being more aware of your surroundings.
With that awareness, you seek to avoid encounters, and if an encounter is unavoidable, seek to put yourself in an advantageous spot (for a clean shoot).
I carry an S&W 642, but occasionally pack heavier (S&W 627 or a Glock 40).
Naturally, the best defense is avoiding groupings of Black folk and hispanics greater than zero.
Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 Compact in 9mm. If you go for ultracompact carry guns you will end up with a gun that sucks to shoot. As long as you get a good rigid belt like a ciguera gear and a decent holster and you don't have a massive beer belly it shouldn't be an issue to cc even full size handguns.

Figure out your local laws for carrying a pistol. A pistol covers your bases for self defense since you can use it both in the home and as an everyday carry. Something like a compact 9MM is relatively easy to conceal without sacrificing too much controlability. As a general rule, and assuming you’re using a common duty size caliber, the smaller a gun is the more it’s going to recoil. Don’t be tempted to buy a larger pistol. A gun is no good if you leave it at home when you need it due to discomfort of carry

The most common causes of incapacitating via gunshot are cns hit, and loss of blood pressure, and loss of blood pressure happens faster the more holes there are for blood to escape through. I don't think that .002" diameter is necessarily a big difference, especially once the .357 bullet swages down into the .355" bore.
If you want a really quick and easy set up, just get a Glock 43X; you should get a WeThePeople Holster and small bottle of CLP (I like G96) from Amazon too. The holster's not great but you'll have it sooner than later with Prime. I'd carry a small flash light, knife, and pepper spray too so you can get an EDC started. I like Streamlight, Kershaw, and any small pocketable mace respectively. As far as ammo goes, you should test a couple of different boxes with different grains to see which ones your gun likes. I'd do 2 boxes of range FMJ ammo in 2 different grains then 3 boxes of hollow points in different grains on your first day. Once you find a good load you like, buy more to fill your spare mags to use in home defense or to stash in car.
Make sure you take classes and learn what to do after a self-defense incident as well. Good luck, man.

My 2 cents here, find a nearby range with rentals, and try out a few compacts/subcompacts. Find what feels good in your hand, and what you can shoot reasonably well. Ask the guy whats popular for CC, its a good starting place to try out.
If you don't plan on shooting much, get something idiotproof like a S&W442/642. Anyone can shoot 38spl decently, it cant jam, and stupidly easy to conceal.
