I want to move a 12v valve that takes about 5 seconds to operate, then cut power to it.

I want to move a 12v valve that takes about 5 seconds to operate, then cut power to it. So, 5 seconds of voltage, then off. What I am triggering it with is a ECU that will give 5v, which I'll put to a 12v relay - but I want it to work for 5 seconds. Snag is, that ECU will give it 5v indefinitely. I cannot time it. This is not a problem I guess but the motor will burn out and possible fire.

Is there a relay out there that has a timer built in, so it kicks on and will stay on for 5 sec then cut off? Or some solution out there?

I know this is autistic AF but my mind is super mechanical and I do a lot of rubegoldberg shit.

This can be made by u fairly cheaply with a few jellybean components that u could find almost anywhere, but if u don't fancy working with a hot iron just buy it.
This listing even show the wiring diagram so it is very useful to u

like that other anon says, you could buy one, but this is a classic application for a 555 timer circuit

just because babby can blink a led on a breadboard with one doesnt mean its good for real applications in real environments

Please tell me you're not referring to the 555 timer, and the billion plus that are made every year. If you are, please elaborate on how it's for babbys and not "real applications".

so if he's going to actually make something that will last inside a car, he has to learn how to use the 555, the protection circuitry, the driver circuit for the relay, make a suitable enclosure...or just fricking buy something that works off the shelf for a fraction of the price and time

Ok, good points. On the other hand, 85 cents for pic related doesn't sound like something I'd want to have in my car. I buy and use lots of laughably inexpensive chinese products, and I'm not surprised when some of them are crap.

i wouldn't use that either...i would shop around and probably pay more like10 -20 for some industrial part

That seems fine, but I get what you're saying. How much is the same thing on mouser/digikey/octopart?

Wtf is an ECU? Why can't you use a microcontroller?

    Timer relay.

one of those timer knobs like in the kitchen oven but fine tuned for minutes
what kinda relay takes 5 seconds to operate? is it some kinda mechanical shit that's slowly turning a ball with the motor instead of a solenoid in and out

The valve itself may not take 5 seconds to open/close, OP just wants 5 seconds of nitrous oxide injection to the engine or something

Yeah, their industrial counterpart is called a timer relay like in post

Yo, a timer relay can do super specific stuff. How do you plan to handle re-triggers? With the right timer relay you can select things like
    - single shot, full reset meaning nothing will happen if you keep holding down the trigger, but will fire instantly when you press again
    - single shot, maintain. It will stay on for at least a minimum amount and then stops as soon as the trigger is released
