Winchester model 1886.
Thank me later.
Well hello fellow patrician, I'm getting a Marlin 1895 in a few weeks in .45-70. from what I can tell, they are all pretty good, I don't think you'll be too sad.
Already got an 1876.
>I want a .45-70 lever action
Just get an AR. There's no point in snowflake loads
I already have an AR

Just an idea. An acquaintance of mine has a .45-70 lever gun. But he had it rebarreled with a 1:18 twist (or 1:16, can’t remember) barrel to stabilize 550+ grain subsonics. With a suppressor all you hear is the hammer fall. It hits the targets HARD. But shooting past 100 yards the trajectory turns from rainbow-like to mortar-like.
Since .45-70 uses a .458 bullet (super common bullet size for big game hunting like .458 win mag, .458 lott, .450 nitro express, .450 Marlin, .450 Rigby, etc etc) reloading is a smorgasbord of bullet selections.
1:18 and 1:20 will stabilize all the bullet you could ever want. They're the two most common twist rates, not sure why your friend felt the need to go faster because his results on paper were probably shooter error more than a lack of stabilization.
No, it was stabilization. I think being subsonic at that weight and length required the tighter twist. I have no doubt that 1:20 can stabilize supersonic 500 grain bullets. I was there when he first tried his subsonic 550 grain loads. They were whizzing. They weren’t key-holing. Turns out they were rotationally yawing a fair amount.
How long was the barrel?
It was a “trapper” with the 16” barrel.
Ah, my 26 inch barrel is a 1:20. Probably explains why I've never had a problem. I load a lot of heavy cast at the 1100fps area.
Just go with a .357, it'll hold more rounds, and will still pack a punch.
Unless you're strictly going to use it for hunting.
If I ever got a lever action I’d get a 357 for ammo prices and dual caliber function. But that’s just me
Henry is higher quality.
The Ruger Marlins are pretty immaculate, but will be hard to get for a while.
GD that thing is gorgeous
dang these things are hard to find
Bros are Uberti rifles good?
I want to get their Winchester 1866 in .38
Pedersoli and Uberti are very good. Chiappa is… okay.
Chiappa is the only current italian mfg that makes 1892's, I own a Cimmaron 1892 which is just a Chiappa.
Otherwise you have to wait and hope Miroku comes out with the exact model of it you want AND then hope you can get it.
Also own a Uberti 1886, which is actually a Pedersoli. Never had an issue with it and it shoots sub-MOA with my handloads through a peep sight at the bench.
I'm extremely happy with my Uberti, imported by Cimarron
deluxe short rifle 1873
Henry & Marlin are both top quality, as is the Winchester 1886. Shop all three hard and pick up the best deal you find. Whichever one you get, if it somehow fails your expectations, can be replaced next year after you have enough experience under your belt to tell the difference. These guns retain their value so long as you keep them in top condition. You can also, by then, look at other possibilities that are a bit more esoteric & exotic.
Your real decision is if you are going to go all traditional cowboy & iron sights minimalist or if you're going to trick it out with suppressor & optics to make it a combat weapon to keep zombies out of the homestead.
Don't overthink it at this point. Settle on aesthetics you want for a price you're happy with and enjoy yourself. This is a realm that is easy to correct mistakes if you become unhappy with your original choice(s).
Frankly, if money isn't an obstacle for you? Get all three and shoot them side-by-side, research all the possible options that might interest you. Then get rid of the two you don't want later on.
Henry is good, Marlin is still getting restarted under Ruger and only have the full stainless versions available. So you are basically stuck with Henry as those two were the standard. Don't buy a used Marlin from the past 10 years unless you can verify it was made in the last year or 2. Henrys are good, the model x if you wanna make a space cowboy version/suppression and any of the other designs for a traditional feel. If you want you can give pedersoli, uberti, Taylor and company, or Winchester.
