i remember a moronic friend of mine told me black ops classifiying the m14 as an assault rifle was wrong, and that it was actually a sniper rifle
I mean im sure there's probably a variant that is used as a sniper rifle, but the rifle itself is an assault rifle, i dont know what kind of standard issue sniper rifle can fire automatically.
Also if my memory serves me correct, the m14 was the standard issue rifle at the beginning of the vietnam war for america. what kind of sniper rifle is given as standard issue to grunt troops?
he was the type of guy that thought he was smarter than everyone in the room
This is what getting homeschooled and having no prior friends gets you /k/
Side note he also thought memes were going to die, not a certain era of memes, just memes in general
What an intelligent friend you have.
sounds like your friend didn't really know what words mean.
>the rifle itself is an assault rifle
technically it's a battle rifle
>the m14 was the standard issue rifle at the beginning of the vietnam war for america
yes
>what kind of sniper rifle is given as standard issue to grunt troops?
the Springfield 03, the M1 Garand, and even the M14, yes
just put a fricking scope on it, and train the user to shoot gooder
>the Springfield 03, the M1 Garand, and even the M14, yes
just put a fricking scope on it, and train the user to shoot gooder
i ment shit like SVD's and L96A1s, i know you can strap a scope onto a garand, going back to the vietnam war, civilian volunteers(or native south vietnamses troops i cant remember) were giving garands because frick you were not giving you our good shit lol
>just put a fricking scope on it, and train the user to shoot gooder
They're not specifically designed sniper rifles with free floating barrels etc
don't have to be
well, my point is simply that all these rifles have been used in the US military as sniper rifles, so
>a moronic friend of mine told me black ops classifiying the m14 as an assault rifle was wrong, and that it was actually a sniper rifle
is not entirely wrong
the M14 continues today as a sniper rifle
7.62 NATO is not an intermediate cartridge, so assault rifle is out as a classification. Battle rifle has become the commonly accepted term for a select-fire rifle in a full-sized cartridge.
the M14 was officially classified as simply rifle in US inventory
because it was a replacement for the M1 garand as the main rifle of the US
in modern parlance, it would be classified a battle rifle and will usually be called such
a battle rifle being a select-fire weapon chambered in a full rifle caliber
it was replaced by the M16, called an assault rifle because it fires an intermediate cartridge
the M14 was then pressed into the designated marksman role
the mk14 EBR is the specific variant of the M14 used for marksmanship
that being said, it is not a snipers rifle, a designated marksman is simply a rifleman with a longer engagement range rather than a unit specifically intended for firing at long range
It's usually referred to as a battle rifle. It's not really what you would refer to as an"assault rifle" because it doesn't fire an intermediate cartridge. However ANY rifle can be a "sniper rifle" if you try hard enough. A Sniper rifle is more of utilizing a rifle for a particular use case than it is an actual type of rifle. Sniping is more of a tactic than it is a weapon choice, that being said there are better weapons for sniping than others.
my point was it wasnt a designated sniper rifle like the SVD or l96a1
>it wasnt a designated sniper rifle like the SVD or l96a1
M14 with a scope on could probably match the SVD, when considering Soviet build and ammo quality
XM21s were accurised M14s used in Vietnam, and those definitely would beat the SVD
the L96A1 is a different beast, yes
>and those definitely would beat the SVD
What are you basing that on? An M14 action in a modern chassis would be decent, but I doubt the differences between an XM21 and an SVD would be significant. Neither of them are free floated and they were both considered "match grade" rifles in their own right.
>when considering Soviet build and ammo quality
im just saying the m14 by itself isnt a sniper rifle like me moron friend claims
And I'm saying your friend's point shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.
That being said, both of you should've learned the term "battle rifle".
>but the rifle itself is an assault rifle
It is not. It fires a full size rifle round. It's a battle rifle.
i stand corrected
The awakened truth is that lots of weapons can be made to fit any role with enough effort and wishful thinking. You could use an expensive .22lr rifle in a sniper role with enough modifications and good ammo. Of course if the enemy is wearing armor your fricked and how bad of an idea this is will become very clear.
>You could use an expensive .22lr rifle in a sniper role with enough modifications and good ammo.
Doesn't the IDF use Ruger 10/22s to snipe at Palestinians?
They shoot for the legs to break up crowds.
"Less than lethal"
still technically a sniper rifle, right? Meant to be shot from a position where direct retaliation is unlikely.
Scout rifle technically
