I recently moved into a new apartment due to divorce. It's small and oddly shaped. I need a eating table so me and my son don't sit on the floor eating lucky charms and beans our hole lives. The shape of a door would fit perfectly in a spot in my kitchen, and it just so happens I have an old solid door sitting around at work. I'm think cut 2x4s 30 inches, two on each corner for legs, then go around the door with a lil 2x4 to make it full, sand then farnish. Free door. How would you do a door table diy?

Sort of a Dutch door split in the middle but with hinges so it can fold in half to save space when not entertaining. Would probably have the legs on the folded half fold up over the top of the door, around both halves, and then curl around the top edge to hug up against the bottom of the table when not in use. Might be able to do that with cabinet hinges and a latch. Definitely would want to do it with a 3/0 6/8 blank slab that's flush and solid wood like birch or oak. Might split the legs into two hinged parts, top part would be the length of both door halves stacked over each other.

6 legs all together. 4 on the non folding part. Two on the foldy bit.

Maybe actually could run a 2x flat along the edge as a sort of skirt and that would cover both halves of ge slab when folded while looking less messy.

I love it brother, but I'm not too sure in my skills to get the hinges/folding right, not that it really matters, free table. What do you mean curl around to the bottom?

Honest question, do you sleep in a race car bed?

Fricking kek. No, but I did buy my son one thinking of this meme and our situation.

          >I need a eating table so me and my son don't sit on the floor

Me has sitted on the floor to eat many times without issue.

Curl was probably the wrong word. I meant they would just fold up to lay flat along the bottom of the table so they wouldn't take up additional space.

I'd probably go to your ex-wife's (your) house and remove the front door, then make a table with it at your new place

Cover the legs in moulding/trim. On the 3-3/4 side of the 2x tack on colonial feather edge, on the 1-3/4 in side use a shoe of colonial stop.

Sounds more like you need to make a couple of chairs or a sofa.

hinged to wall, 2x4 legs hinged to outer edge s.t. it folds to wall and legs support table when folded out. as a bonus you can reuse door hinges the only thing you need is 2x4s.

OP is an apartment cuck, I imagine he wouldn't want to redo the drywall.

You did just give me a cool idea of how you could lock it into the upright position though, just nail a stud on it on the wall horizontally right above where the table would fold up, bore out a latch receiver and slap a single knob thumb turn on the slab. Could even trim it out to look like a door and have a cool conversation piece and convincing Murphy bed table. Could probably even get away with disguising the legs as trim.

And sand, prime and repaint the scuffs from the door hitting the wall, the marks from the hinges, and no to mention cover up whatever damage from the latching mechanism he would likely need to keep the door closed while not in use.

Or just let it hinge downwards when not in use so you don't need a latch or anything else but gravity to keep it flat to the wall.
This also lets you position it under a window or where cabinets or other fixtures might interfere with stowing it upwards.
        t. Installed a table like this in a 400 sq ft house, that worked perfectly for years for two people's dining needs, crafting, etc. Also just used one diagonal prop in the center to hold it in the level position, which made more room for chairs and people's legs, and is less likely to get knocked/ kicked out from under it.

consider going to the thrift store, they have actual dining tables for a few dollars most of the time that isn't eating off a fricking door.
