I plan to get a job at Sportsman's Warehouse at the gun counter soon. Most of my firearms knowledge is more on the tactical side of things (ARs, AKs, handguns, optics, etc etc) but I assume at least half of my job is going to be dealing with fudds/hunters who want simple things like pump action shotguns or rifles in .420 Weathersneed or whatever the frick.
What kinds of knowledge should I have for that kind of stuff, and what are some good resources to learn from?
recommend the worst guns to boomers and troons
If people inquire about what to get, recommend something ubiquitous i.e. 9mm, .308, .223, 12ga.
If someone comes in and knows what he wants, don't try to talk him out of it.
checked fpbp
This. If someone wants something and you have or can get it, don’t shit on it. I can’t tell you how many frickin firearm “gatekeepers” I’ve run across at the retail level. I don’t need your opinion or approval, Rusty. Just sell me the damn gun/ammo.
Don't overthink it. If customers ask for advice/opinions, then just draw on what you know. It's okay if your recs are a bit different from those given by your co-workers, as long as they're not outright moronic
inventory and basic book keeping skills are invaluable for embezzling. Remember that a corporation will Never pay you anywhere close to the value you bring in so you are well within your right to abuseyour position’s responsibilities and privileges for personal gain
LEMME GET 2 BOX THAT WINCHESTER DOUBLE OUGHT BUCK,,,,,,,ACK'SHLY MAKE IT 4.............................FERGOT THE OL BALL N CHAINS COMIN THIS TIME................WOMEN AM I RIGHT...??????? ..... ..ANYWAYS LEMME TAKE A PEEK AT THAT THERE FORDY FIVE.....THE ONE WITH THE TRUMP HEAD,,,,,,,,,,,BEEN THINKIN BOUT AN EARLY BIRTHDAY PRESENT...........................................................................
When they come in and ask for a recommendation tell them
>DYOR
and refuse to elaborate any further.
70% of your day to day business will be pistols, full sizes simply won’t sell, and boomers will ask you about the most obscure cartridges you’ve never heard of
>t. Works an army exchange gun counter
Do you have bolt actions in .300 savage? Also I noticed you don't stock much .444 marlin. I'd like to talk to your manager regarding your ammo selection and availability right now. It's important to keep the customer happy. Oh by the way where's your .30 russian short? I see .223 and .308, even some 7.62x54 but none of that .30 russian short.
Break a hip and die.
(However .444 is based and the only gun I regret selling)
You'll regret this. I hope you enjoy getting a visit from the better business bureau.
The gun manufacturers have videos that while they promote their own brand they inform you of the specifications customers are interested in. Once you have watched the video, passed the test you usually get credits for discounts for that brands items.
Your store will give you a log in ID that allows you to choose the videos you want to watch.
Ex. The gun counter guys choose gun information, the archery dept gays choose sticks and sharp metal bits, the clothes gays do the panty videos.
TlDR; former Cabela's gun counter and gun library knower
FFL here. Don't worry about it. You'll learn as you go along, and chances are you'll just be dealing with grandma who wants an EZ Shield in .380 more than Henry Hunter Huntington III looking for his 6th deer rifle.
But in the meantime, just watch some Ron Spomer videos and read the specs on whatever optics SW has at the counter. That's where most of the money is anyway
I swear to god I have looted that shop in Seven Days to Die.
>Sportsman’s Warehouse
These still exist? The one in my area closed in 2009.
They exist in white parts of the country. Just as pricey as Cabela's with half the selection.
yes there’s a huge one in Tucson with no competition so don’t expect them to die any time soon
If anyone tries to use a laser make sure they point it away from you, the beam can bounce off the display case glass and frick up your eyes
You guys have any 12ga trap wads?
>12 ga trap wads
Sir this is a sporting goods store. Doom wads are found on the internet.
Speak about what you know. If you don't know say so. Not hard.
spend time getting to know your inventory.
be prepared to be asked questions you can't answer. learn how to find a satisfactory answer in a timely manner.
Former Academygay here. As other anons said, it's easy and not hard to learn, and you should definitely use you slow times to read up on technical specs. Main thing is to develop a strong nose for straw sales, which they'll teach you as well. Tune out the entitled and obnoxious boomers but remember that not all of them are fools, so when you get a wise old frick listen and keep him talking, and he's liable to come buy shit from you every week. Be firm about shit without being an butthole, cause this is one area of retail where you can always say no to a customer if you think they're sus.
>im getting a shitty retail wagie job
how about you do something else instead
