It's actually good to read multiple sources from the whole political spectrum.

I already knew before this whole mess started Russia couldn't win a conventional war against NATO, you only had to look at their economy and demographics, it's something most people chilling for them seemed to have forgotten, unless you are fighting a defensive war and are willing to accept horrendous losses through years of guerrilla warfare (Afghanistan and Vietnam) you better get a strong economy and demographics to backup your blitzkrieg (USA) or you will lose initiative and get wrecked (Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan).

I also knew there was a chance Russia would try a second attack after Crimea 2014 because the West (namely Obama and Merkel) simply didn't sanction them hard enough and Putin was already showing more and more signs he was going to throw away the facade of respecting democracy and hence international rule of law.

People actually believed after the Chechen Wars Russia had finally learned their lesson given their later performance in Georgia and Crimea and could at least take over smaller countries.

I recognize however I wasn't expecting Ukraine to fight them back so well, everyone focused too much on Russia and too little in post-2014 Ukraine, but I supposed that's only natural, aside from a few specific nations and your own, most people really don't know much about other countries.

Pic related: Maria was the first ukrainian girl I ever saw in an anime.

          I'd like to add one additional point to this, anon;
          >Russia had finally learned their lesson
That's not an unreasonable assumption, especially given that I also assumed that, as an ex-KGB guy, Putin would at least have a bit of savvy about what it means when opposing governments OPENLY TELL YOU they're reading your e-mails almost before you send them. You don't show your hand like that unless you're demonstrating you're serious about this shit. So I assumed further that he either had an ace up his sleeve or that the Russian military was indeed evolving.
But he didn't. And it wasn't. And so we're here.

russia calls thermobarics "flamethrowers" or similar

  4. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

they aren't that bad. A thermobaric can range anywhere from a hand grenade to a big ass air dropped bomb. Its just a method to maximize an explosion. Let me tell you how:

    1. Container of powder or liquid is broken
    2. This Aerosolized mixture spreads quickly with the local atmosphere (AIR.)
    3. It is ignited.
    4. It uses both itself and the atmosphere to create the explosion.
    5. It is a very efficient explosion.

what does this do though? Why I AM GLAD YOU ASKED!

Lots of urban legends about sucking out eyes, and vacuum bomb, other good shit. It doesn't do that. If you deploy it inside a fortified structure, it will use up all the oxygen and suffocate everyone. so that is cool. The real specialty is just generating a shit ton of overpressure and flattening things. That displaces local atmosphere the same as any other explosion, so you get a low pressure area momentarily; but its not special. So it will knock the wind out of everyone and potentially knock eyeballs out of the head, but that is the same as anything else. People who aren't familiar with it aren't used to death by concussive blast wave and are more familiar with death by fragmentation, close range shattering explosion effects; so you get a story of a story of a story. Here! have some videos.

Ironically the questionable part is the fuel.
      >Since the most common FAE fuels, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, are highly toxic, undetonated FAE should prove as lethal to personnel caught within the cloud as with most chemical agents.

But ain't this the bomb they used in Ender's Game to destroy the bug planet?
If that's all it is why is it hyped up so much? When the war started it was talked about like it was one step below a nuke.

        Anonymous

        (Enders game spoilers)
No, the enders game weapons were this crazy sci-fi atom destabilizing chain reaction death ray. It starts nuclear fission in whatever it hits, regardless of material, and the fragments generated are also somehow able to start that magical fission.

The nifty part was that it was just their bog standard ship to ship weapon, the dramatic superweapon part was choosing to point it at a planet, that usage having been declared taboo similarly to the irl nuke taboo.

          Anonymous

In the book it was an experimental ship to ship weapon. Would not call it bog standard since it was basically a super weapon allegory for nuclear bombs. Only used twice if I r c .

Good god, was this the plan all along?
      > RVC gets fast vehicles for maneuver warfare
      > send token RVC force across the border
      > minor harrying attacks, hit-and-run
      > RF sees small force that could be easily dealt with
      > RF does what it always does and reacts with inappropriate, clumsily targeted overkill
      > fricks everything to hell and gone
      > RF wrecks own town, has to evacuate civilians
      > internally displaced persons sent all over Russia to live with family
      > eyewitness accounts spread the story in a way no state media can censor
      > panic among civilians
      > anti-Putin partisans grow emboldened
      > RVC scoots into next population center
      > wash, rinse, repeat
      > chaos and paranoia spread throughout RF territory exponentially

They knew that the Russian government would overreact and poke themselves in the eye, and now they're using it to (maybe) kick off a civil war on the cheap?

I don't think this will start anything, russia can still guarantee basic necessities, and its docile slave populations won't resort to violent uprising for that. putin knows he can whip them just for fun, as long as he does not take it too far things will stay as usual.

Just look at that one video of that chechen beating up like 15 russian conscripts, they all just lie there and take it, and those are not random civilians.

There's nothing wrong with thermobarics but there is plenty wrong with the TOS. It's a low range, inaccurate, slow as frick vehicle that also happens to be slow to reload and explodes in a gigantic fireball if anyone looks at it the wrong way. It would be a decent enough siege weapon if the Russians managed to actually increase the range to anything remotely reasonable. The only reason it exists is because Russians can't into air power and the Russian killchain is like literally ten times longer than the western ones.

        It wasn't a warning shot
It's more like, you shoot at a tank, the crew bails because they don't see you and are scared the next shot will kill them. After they bail, you shoot again and blow up the tank
You didn't intend to not blow up the tank with that first shot

Lolno. You can hide from regular HE behind a reasonably thick berm (though you will get concussed). Thermo causes the air itself to explode (hence the name fuel-air explosive), ripping your lungs out through your mouth, due to the pressure differential. So trying to lie down behind a rock just causes the enemy to find your prone bloody corpse later on.
