I'm interested to know what metric you use to assess the success of plane programs. At least with the F-15 we can point at its ludicrous K/D ratio, or the ridculous numbers of F-4s that were made and it's workhorse status throughout the cold war.

I think another good point is what it represents for naval aviation. The B model means that a lot of countries who don't have proper carriers now have the option of a modern strike fighter capable of STOVL and VTOL operations. That means that most famously Japan but also Italy, Australia, or any other customers who have ships with flight decks now have greatly increased naval aviation options.
B model was designed to fill the modern harrier/helicopter market yeah. The fact is that the harrier had been designed in the early 50's, sold everywhere and needed an upgrade.
VTOL was always about saving the second world naval costs by allowing cheaper alternatives in ship building.

In case you didn't know, US F-35s have not been leaving the plant in the last several months. Because of titanium supply issues and software issues, they're literally putting incomplete planes in storage, and have about a year's worth of work in storage.
Last I heard about a month ago, Lockheed planned to get it fixed by October of 2024, but the DOD gave them till June to get their shit squared away.

The F-16 entered production in 1978, they are still building them today with over 4,000 planes total.
