Recently visited Fort Smith my self. Definitely an awesome place to live. It just seems to have the right mix of everything.

Just about. If you cross the border into Oklahoma it is for sure that way. I visited some family of mine just across the Border in Oklahoma who have a cattle ranch. I spotted a coyote on the ranch while we were driving around. She stopped the truck, pulled a rifle out from under the back seat and shot the coyote all in less than 20 seconds like it's something she's done a thousand times. Said if it had been a deer we would have been eating venison for dinner.

I have a few kids, a mortgage, but I'm in a very rural part of my state. I garden, hunt and fish about 50% of my stuff and its a good activity to teach my boys. However, if I were single, I would highly consider buying a 40 acre plot and moving a big ol' double wide to the BACK of the property, or at least a far walk to home. If it weren't for the social connotation that came with living in a trailer I wouldn't mind it. Some of them are nice, 2-3 bedrooms and a living room and kitchen. Got everything you need.

per advice from a happy ex-military individual I am about 0.6 us acre and that allows for an 'entry-level' scale suitable for my expectations. I grow 50% of my food, hunt, fish, and garden. Its pretty hard to do with a family but its better than the alternative where I buy everything from the store and play video games in my spare time like losers. Even just doing what I've done, in addition to my grandpa owning a farm growing up. I'm just saying its a lot of work, and expensive. I would love to have Solar but its a big initial investment, as is farming/gardening. You need gas and a tractor and dirt, a plow, etc. Also a shitload of water.

Here is one scenario.
Build a cabin on an 8'x20' trailer. A trailer with a current tag is not a structure, in many places.
Build it in the parking lot of a Lowe's, (well . . . they <might> let you..... 🙂 ).
Anyway. Consider building it in a city and taking it to Ruralvania. Think of all the trips to the store involved in the project.
When you get there, you will have a place to sleep on day 1.
If you need to get it towed there, it still might be a good idea.
Also, if the deal falls through sometime later, you can cut your losses and take it with you.
After you set it up, build porches as desired. After that, outbuildings might be totally casual.
This is the important part. Be part of the community. Go to church. Totally the best option. Acceptance and networking.
If church is not your thing, volunteer somewhere and be nice to people.

I went with Missouri. Arkansas has statewide building codes and permitting that I didn't want to deal with. When I want to build something or add on to it I just want to do it and in Missouri I can.
