I am thinking of buying a Ruger GSR in 308 for hunting on the east coast, mostly hogs and deer but maybe black bear too. Is this a good option? I would like a hunting bolt action rifle with iron sights and a wood stock, and I would probably throw a suppressor on to help out with the short barrel length. It it worth it? Or are there similar options im overlooking

What do you mean "help out" with the short barrel length?

Perfectly decent basic option. 308 will deal with anything and on the east coast where there tends to be a lot of undergrowth/grass may provide a bit more margin.
      >and I would probably throw a suppressor on to help out with the short barrel length
Suppressors are nice on all guns but particularly on bolts, can ignore backpressure as an issue and with no action cycling it's significantly quieter. That said the velocity bonus is negligible so I wouldn't get one just for that.

      >What do you mean "help out" with the short barrel length?
Technically suppressors are mildly better then nothing in terms of increasing velocity, there will be some extra pressure on the bullet a tiny bit longer. But it's like, 15-40fps or something like that, a 6-10" can would probably give less then a single extra inch of barrel.

Contrary to fuddlore suppressors don't make guns LESS accurate of course, but the opposite isn't true either. They just suppress sound.

        >Contrary to fuddlore suppressors don't make guns LESS accurate
Well, not in the sense that they open op the guns MOA. But cans DO generally create a noticeable POI shift at longer ranges

          >But cans DO generally create a noticeable POI shift at longer ranges
Sure, so would adding another inch of barrel. The velocity change isn't zero and at 700+yd even an extra few dozen fps is going to shift POI a bit. But unless you're constantly swapping can on a bolt precision rifle (why!?) it doesn't matter, you just zero with the can on and that's that.

After the war ends I wanna buy this or Rem 700. .338 LM is overkill for me I think.

I have a Major hard on for a Ruger M77 in .270 in the Zytel Boat Paddle Stock. Been wanting one for years and the prices have been creeping up!

I like mine. Got tired of the long eye relief scope after a year because the balance felt kinda odd and honestly didn't serve a purpose that would replace other rifles I've been using for scouting trips like my AR or AK. The original 10 round mag that came with it was ass though. Ruger made them with a wide base plate with a sharp corner that liked to catch on my shirt and pack. But ACSS mags are common enough and otherwise work well.

      >like my AR or AK
Was it worth it? I mean yeah I love my service rifle and AR-15, but I can't imagine me scouting with them. The only reason to go on scouting trip with my AR is that bear or hog can jump on me out of nowhere and shtf. And I don't think that it will turn out well for me even if I have decent skills at shooting from that type of weapon.

in the off season here in AZ during the summer there's really not a whole lot that's open to hunt except for coyotes and a couple other varmints. During actual big game hunts I'll use my .308 or .243 but just coyotes then my AR or AK or whatever random rifle I feel like hiking with

Coyote's are an invasive vermin. They eat and attack farm animals, pets, children, etc. You can complain all you want about "muh heccin forest doggo dindu nuffin!" but at the end of the day, I'd kill 100 coyotes if it meant protecting 1 pet dog.

stark difference in quality between the Ruger Gunsite Scout and the Savage 110.

the Ruger has a stainless barrel and bolt option, laminate stock. the fit and finish is insanely good, but you do pay a premium for it. I have Savage and Ruger guns, the Savage is fine but it will rust easily without constant oiling, this seems to be a common issue with Savages.

      This.
My Tikka .270 is magnificent. Super accurate, reliable and the smoothest and quickest bolt action I have ever used.
It was my first real rifle and has completely spoiled me. No other bolt action rifle compares.

Sure. Personally, being more into classic guns, I'd rather buy myself LK M70, but it seems like a decent choice as well.

For a metal 10 rounder? Cheapest I've found them is $189+tip, tho I guess there are off-brand plastic 3 and 5 rounders.

Midway has the steel 10 rounders for $85 and 5 rounders for $115, I'm sure they'll tack a bit more on for shipping but that's still cheaper.

I would pick an old Lee Enfield for the price you’ll pay, there’s better options out there for a .308 hunting rifle. If you want wood, get a Lee. If you want good, get a Berga. Otherwise, just slap together a LMT AR-10.

I like mine, IIRC the stainless barrel is slightly longer if the barrel length is a concern. It's a very satisfying weapon to shoot and generally prefer it to my AR.

The stainless barrels are 16.10", whereas normal barrels are exactly 16".

Synthetic is lighter and prolly cheaper. If I actually hunted I would have gone ruger American but the RGS is a nice rifle if you dont mind spending the money.
