Wild game does not wear armor. If you are skillful, all you need is a single cartridge, under a dollar, to bag a deer or hog and a ton of meat, as well as to keep the hide and innards as intact as possible.
But it is also the ethical way to hunt, to make a clean kill. All you need is one shot in the heart/lungs area. Larger calibers are appropriate for larger game and for long range shooting.

It’s a fricking deer. If you shoot anywhere near that area they’ll keel over in minutes and all you gotta do if you lose track is follow the blood trail. Deer skin is the best blanket you can make on your own if you’re not an old lady who can quilt, so there’s no need to destroy the hide.
But 5.56 is a israeli cartridge and I only use my AR-10 with .308 WINchester to impromptu hunt.

Destroys too much meat. Sometimes you miss the sweet spot, but the venison will collapse soon if you hit anywhere near said sweet spot and you finish the job with your knife. Hunting serves two purposes, food and trophies. Full auto damages both.
Now, when you’re hunting humans, full auto is the way to go. You don’t want to keep a trophy in current year and human meat tastes terrible.
Controlled burst fire leads to tighter groups than full auto. Semi auto groups are the tightest, but burst fire is much faster. You can shoot a fully automatic weapon in bursts as well.
