How would you justify your ownership of a ”black rifle” to fudd relatives if they started asking about it?

I don’t engage in those conversations. My grandparents own guns but hate those “assault weapons” because their nightly news is filled with Louisville gangbangers killing each other yet they think me shooting cans in the woods with an SKS is part of the problem. Boomers do not have enough active brain cells left to change their viewpoints on anything so it is not worth engaging.

I have to deal with this constantly because I'm in a ban state. There is nothing inherently more dangerous about an AR-15. Banning it is like banning a Honda Civic because it's involved in the most accidents/drunk driving / whatever. Lately, they've been fixated on the 5.56 round itself and how it tumbles and explodes and whatever else some homosexual on CNN told them. So, I have to enlighten them to two major facts: 1) other rifles can fire the same bullet. 2) AR's can fire different bullets. I had to watch talking head read radio transcripts and defend the fricking Uvalde PD because black rifle too scary.

I cap it off with this: if every salt weapon disappeared today, not banned new sales while leaving everything current still in circulation, but magically disappeared, there would still be mass shootings. Columbine, Virginia Tech, every basketball american shooting don't depend on the scary black rifles.

To the car analogy, it's more like banning humvees because the military uses them. Ar-15s kill less people every year than fist fights do, so the analogy of "Honda civics kill more people than other cars so we're banning them" doesn't actually work.

        Anonymous

It does though because honda civics are the bread and butter of cheap cars, and so is the ar15 the bread and butter of semiauto rifles in the US.
Almost nobody owns a fricking hummer and its viewed as an expensive luxury
Not remotely the same role as the ar15

Important point because I think a lot of people retroactively assume AR-15s were used at Columbine and it didn’t happen smack dab in the middle of the federal AWB.

If you're a functioning adult, it shouldn't matter. I have my own house. I'll own whatever guns I want. If you're a NEET living at home, your family is probably concerned because you give off schizo school shooter vibes.

My family isn't a bunch of commies, so I've never had to have this conversation with them. But you could start with the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, the USSR, and communists regimes around the world like the Khmer Rouge. The Founding Fathers, who led a violent revolt against their authoritarian government, understood the deterrence that an armed populace provides.

Don't let them drag you into the argument that the right to keep and bear arms only applies to the "militia" and the DOD. There's a reason the second amendment is in the bill of rights and not Article 1. of the Constitution. The Anti-Federalist fought tooth and nail to get individual rights enumerated into the bill of rights because they foresaw the frickery that would come about from the federal government if we didn't explicitly lay out what rights they couldn't touch.

You can also point out the decline of the mental health system. Instead of tossing mentally ill people in asylums where they can't hurt the public, in the 1950's we started releasing them onto the streets with the hope that medication will solve all their issues. Starting in the '60s, you can track the inverse relationship between the insane asylum population and the number of mentally ill individuals in prison. Couple that with the revolving door of today's justice system, and you have dangerous people wandering around the streets hurting innocent people.

It's also important to break down the numbers behind US gun deaths. Roughly 2/3rds of those are suicides. But when you compare the US suicide rate to other nations, we're number 23 despite our lax gun laws. If gun ownership leads to suicides, we should be number 2 just behind Switzerland.

In my experience, I was the first in my immediate and partially extended family to get into modern semi-automatics after sandy hook (I was around 16 or 17 then). My parents and paternal grandparents were definitely concerned at first, especially when I bought an AK on my 18th birthday. They were hunting rifle types, but I had been asked things like why would you want an assault rifle. Anyway, they all own ARs now. I'm not an AK gay anymore though. I think the best response is to continue being a good dude, and your family will eventually come around with familiarity. As long as you're not a moron or sperg about it, that is.

It takes an average of 10 minutes for the cops to respond in an emergency with their own semi-auto weapons. It takes 10 seconds, if that, with one of your own. Also, more ammunition and less time between shots is always better than the inverse in such conditions, hence why cops carry such weapons themselves.
