most of styropyro's lasers aren't strictly homemade, most of the time he's repurposing laser diodes/tubes taken from other items. it's still really cool, don't get me wrong, i've watched tons of his videos. i just don't think that any regular person can *make* his own lasers - but if i'm wrong, tell me how, i would LOVE to make my own.

i heard the blue laser diode (Blu-Ray) was invented by accident by some guy who was trying to make a better blue LED. dude sold it to sony and got rich overnight.

you can indeed. the easiest is the TEA open-air nitrogen laser. high voltage source, couple band saw blades, doesn't even need mirrors, pulses in the UV, and benjamin franklin could have made it, although he wouldn't have known how the lasing action worked. for more reliable / stronger operation encloses the laser channel with some plexi and free flow some nitrogen thru it.

lmao you can built it, but the FCC will shoot your dog and crucify you on a radio tower for it

Do you have a brother with an irrational fear of laser cutters by chance?

Non American here, just curious, does the ATF or a similar organization care if you build the literal moonraker laser in your shed?

Not really. They are paranoid as hell over explosive components and get a hate boner for guns and dogs every political huha. But lasers and electronics don't really catch their interest.

Theoretically, you could bypass your main breaker to power a laser with the full force of the current coming in. That'd be about as strong as a residential one could go I reckon.

for a CW laser, yes. if you just want a burst, a large capacitor bank would be a better solution

Not without every modicum of safety you won’t, even being in the same room as that laser can permanently blind you.

dude, cool shit doesn't get done by being 100% safe. doing anything yourself incurs some level of risk, you need to accept that. don't be a moron and say "hmmm let's see how bright this is, i'll stand in front of it with some sunglasses", but also don't just give up on a project you think you can do because you can't be totally 100% sure nothing will go wrong.

No I mean if you mess up you will be dead or maimed enough to be unable to complete your cool shit.
