A-50s were designed in the 70s, building on an airframe designed in the 60s, so what's the issue? Saying it was an S-200 isn't as wild of a claim as you think it is, especially given its range. Unlike the PAC-2, whose (declared) range is barely sufficient to hit an A-50 at 160km, the S-200 has the range for it.

The only issue I can see is that, unlike the Patriot, the S-200 illuminates the target. As a result, I find it difficult that an AWACS didn't realise it had an S-200 gunning for it. However, picrel may explain it.

Some Patriot missile variants have a Home-On-Jam function that essentially turns it into an ARM. It tracks the largest radar emitter around without ground based radar. Ukraine may have simply lofted them into the area they knew the A-50 and Il-22M were flying and let their own emissions do the rest.

Assuming the launcher still had to get very close to Russian ground forces, wouldn't they have noticed the launch and immediately made their aircraft aware that possible SAMs were just launched?

I'm not making fun of you anon, but do you know how radio networks and command and control are set up at these levels? Unironically even in a US operation the first and best warning of something like this happening might come from the AEW&C plane itself.

How would they know the difference between a SAM, a TBM, or a HIMARS rocket from 10-15km away? Who do they report it too? A huge problem for Russia in this has been their command and communication structure, which is why so many of their "epic drone videos" have so many cuts. It takes an hour for the message from the Drone operator to get to an artillery unit telling them there was a target in a location, and by the time they fire, the target has moved and they hit an empty field.

That's not what Russian wants others to believe. That is what the RU Military actually believes. If you're in the RU military and you say for example, the Moskva got hit by the Ukrainians you get punished. All these bullshit narratives are done by the RU Ministry of Defense and fed to the RU Military as what actually happened and they're expected to not only believe it, but at least act as if they believe it.

Which means they plan their actions based on this bullshit. There are telegram messages of RU troops complaining about how the RU Air Force is looking for the men who shot down the A-50 by accident to punish them. That's how deep the bullshit goes. And you know that if they don't "find them", they'll just make someone be the ones responsible for shooting it down.

People at this point still don't get how Russia works.

Let us use some logical reasoning given the aftermath, a rarity for you disgusting brown animals like yourself I know, but do hold on.

Why is the replacement A-50 refusing to go over the sea and only flying around Krasnodar if there is no problem? That's limiting the early warning capabilities quite badly, so why do that?

they know that Ukraine shot it down, same with Moskva, which is why they modified their patrols knowing that Ukraine CAN shoot the next one down.
However they HAVE TO act as if they shot it down, they have to look for someone who shot it down, otherwise they lose face

The RU military doesn't learn from its mistakes because it institutionally doesn't admit mistakes.

Ukraine got some Patriot batteries so they moved one to Orkhiv, and another in Kherson. Its' not that complicated. They started shooting high priced jets out of the sky since then.

This is slowly shifting air dominance towards Ukraine. They're going to keep destroying irreplaceable Russian air assets, air defenses, then keep putting more and more of their upcoming F-16's in the sky. They will slowly be able to hit farther and farther as Russian air defenses degrade.

The most horrifying thing about this war isn’t the threat (re. increasing inevitability) of a nuclear exchange or the atrocities. Such things are par for the course and are to be expected to a degree.

It’s how an entire nation of people can become completely disconnected from reality. This isn’t the propaganda of Nazi Germany or even the Soviet Union where they had mass brainwashing and information deprivation (removing all forms of communication with the outside world that conflict with “the message”) refined down to a science. This is the political equivalent of reading CWC’s rants about Sonichu and the Dimensional Merge and taking them at face value.

I think in this day and age we have finally come to the realization of just how dumb we are, especially when not educated on how to think critically, consider the bigger picture, and detach our logical reasoning from our emotions.

To be fair they were fighting France and the Ottomans too, and UK public opinion turned massively against the war for its cost in lives and cash. If the Russians had done a better job against the Turks and had the backbone to keep fighting they might have been able to wait out Britain. But they didn’t have the stability for it either.

    >— an unknown air defense system with missiles and elements from Patriot
We had a thread that speculated the S-300 radar is being mated with Patriot launch elements the other day, given the radars for the Patriot are the most limited resource, so being able to replace that with something on hand (and not being much used at this point given Ukraine's limited S-300 interceptor stocks) would prove valuable to any "frankenSAM" project.

That seems to be the case, among other pairs of western missile + Soviet radar.

They probably smuggled something across the river and had targeting assistance from the NATO AWACS in the black sea. The front line is too large to effectively police to the point where meeting up with a trucker is kind of easy actually.

    >How exactly did Ukraine shoot down one of these flying about 160km from the frontline?

Flying this close to the frontline certainly helped. But in theory such a flying radar should have seen it coming, should have been able to avoid it and should have an fighter escort to take care of any thread.

Lmao this is good to show that when the RU Ministry of Defense says that for example, the Moskva went down due to a smoking accident, that's what they send out and what they act upon inside the Ministry of Defense and inside the RU Armed Forces.

This should be obvious as thats one of the purposes of bullshit narratives like that but people for some reason think the actual RU military acts as if "everyone knows" the reality behind the A-50 shotdown or the Moskva getting blown but no, they act as if their own bullshit is real and if you don't you get punished.

I don't know shit about radar technologies and shit. How does a plane knows it has been locked on by another plane (before the plane locking on even fired anything at the locked-on plane)?

      Anonymous

There's a little Chinaman in the nose of the plane with a pair of binoculars and when he sees a missile coming he pulls on a string which rings a bell in the wienerpit.

There's active and passive radar. Active radar is literally shooting shit at something and the recipient KNOWS this.

radar-guided missiles need to constantly have radar waves shot at the target to “paint” it and track where it is so the missile can guide itself to the target
the target merely has sensors on it that can tell when radar of a specific frequency or wavelength is being shot at it; therefore if those sensors go off it means someone is tracking your position with a radar
different types of guidance (ex: infared/heat-seekers) need different types of detection methods and countermeasures

A redditor theorized ukes used MALDs masquerading as stormshadows. When the A50 locked them and fed their info the ground based AA, the MALDs led the Russian missiles into the A50.

Ukes baited ruzzians into shooting down their own planes

This is some stupid schizo variation of the AMRAAM theory. Detecting Su-24 lobbing Storm Shadows is one of the main jobs of A-50 there. And the ruskies had closed the Kerch bridge at the time which is the safety protocol for Storm Shadow launches. So the theory is that the ukies distracted the A-50 with MALD spam and hit them with AMRAAM Black person-rigged to Su-27.

They can't admit their own inferiority to themselves, the psychological price would be too high

      Because Russia Stronk.
If your enemy can strike you with impunity, you weren't strong enough to stop them, but if you hurt yourself in an accident, these things regrettably happen from time to time. It's the same reason why they say "We retreated to better defensive positions after inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy" when talking about the disorganized rout from Kharkiv Oblast, or call the northern front collapsing a fient. They can never admit to being weak, to losing because of that weakness, because Russia Stronk.

Looking at the thread the cause is either
        A. they shot it down with american shit and
        a soviet missle
        B. They shot it down with older soviet shit and a soviet missle
        C. They shot their own plane down themselves (moronic radio operator)
        D. The patriot system against expectations of the Ukrainians, Russians and Americans is actually capable of shooting a plane down at 160km+
        E. F-16 have already arrived in Ukraine and have shot down the plane under stealth.

Personally I'm going for D; the unexpected power of americans strongest AA would be the stuff that punches through their most valuable and necessary asset. Besides the Ukrainians and Americans would announce the deployment of F-16 to the media like they've done before with other weapons

when russia claims its invincible air defense system has 300 km range it is probably about 30 km in reality

when usa claims the patriot has 100 miles range ir probably means about 200 miles

It appeared in Russia propaganda, therefore immediately painting a target on it for Ukrainian to unleash mystical force that beat any odds.

Why is the replacement A-50 refusing to go over the sea and only flying around Krasnodar if there is no problem? That's limiting the early warning capabilities quite badly, so why do that?
