real question though, what are these things in essence?

I own a pair and have used them. You want thick gloves with lots of padding on the back or they'll frick up your hands. Pretty much useless for climbing straight up a tree like spiderman or something, but if you can get your arms partway around the tree then they work great, especially with the foot claws too.
They are also handy for climbing up brick walls with small gaps in the bricks, but it takes practice. Btw I wouldn't trust these things with your life or do anything too crazy with them, pretty sure they're made with very cheap metal in China.
looking at these pics its Just a piece of low grade steel with some barbs welded in place and a nylon strap. In other words dirt cheap. im surprised they're not less expensive honestly
it's a roofers tool from medieval Japan. used to aid in reaching areas of large buildings that employ wooden roofs.
sure they can act like claws, but since they're barely attached to your actual hands the benefit is negligible. they worked at a certain period of time in a specific environment that is no longer common. they might have some uses for modern roofers, but since none of them bother it's probably not needed.
even for a self defense tool, there are far better options.
They'll get you killed, as your hand becomes stuck and you cannot grab on to the next anchoring point. Then, they'll snap and you'll fall to your death.
>this
Because I can still use my hands while wearing them, I wear them all the time out in excursions. It’s nice to know you could be setting up, hands full of tent fabric, and you’re attacked from 5oclock, you have just enough time to turn and tiger strike with the right hand. They also keep your hands warm.
You will at best cause sprain injury to your feeble hand bones and at worst cause actual long-term nerve damage.
T. Got arrested a few times and cuffs were way to tight nerves didn't ""quiet for a year, and tried wearing a pair of these and immediately felt the weird angle pressure to back of hand
..use a pick knife
The injuries you inflict on yourself with those will be amusing to witness. I'm sure that velcro will hold up swimmingly! Share photos after usage please.

Inexperienced morons acting like subject matter experts is par for the course on PrepHole
We're talking about a board where someone unironically posted that cellphones are 1k off for navigation. That's the level of moronation we're dealing with here.

So, how effective would the hand hook spickes be if you had to fight a bear??
A bears paw is just basically a ninja climbing claw ain't it?

Your enemy will fear you, serpent of the trees.
This. Like anything truly and authentically ninja, it is simply the best gear for the purpose and cannot be improved upon.

Pretty gay, seeing as your legs do the work.
Climbing spikes and proper strap with harness is the way to go.

This. A high quality east coast vs. West coast thread died for this 🙁
schoolmarm
totally ineffective, wrapping a rope or piece of cloth around your wrists and ankles and the tree is much more effective
they will crush urbhands, I tried as a kid with the grappling hook combo, a isefulset is boot spikes and gloves
Personally I never go into the woods without at least 2 pairs of ninja gloves.

Best way to get gud at climbing is to climb. No shortcuts to athleticism.
Both safe and effective

I mean, it's 9.24$. What do you expect?
Find a welder and $5 of tool steel and make your own design, no reason this can't be engineered out

real life ninja hokage autistic kid on youtube has made a video essay about them
Look up.
How many ninjas do you see?

they attach to fabric that attaches to nothing but your hands
it couldn't be effective if it tried
Why would you comment if you didn't know how climbing gear works.
