The US had a pretty good history of hitchhiking until the early 1970’s. A few high profile man-bites-dog stories emerged of hitchhikers being killed, while at the same time local police wanted to put a stop to it along interstates because it was seen as a road safety hazard. The FBI even produced anti-hitchhiking propaganda at the time. Concurrently, more people could afford cars so the practice was in decline. Also, the “hitchhiking murder” meme was being pushed by Hollywood; Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released in the early 70’s.

California conducted a survey and found that hitchhikers weren’t over represented in crime statistics as either victims or perpetrators. That fact remains constant across the globe.

This isn’t to say hitchhiking is safe. It’s just no more dangerous than interacting with any stranger on a personal level in semi-private, close quarters for an extended period of time. Prior to the 70’s that wasn’t a concern. But I’m not so sure about current year.

The number of hitchhikers being picked up is not enough to be represented in California's insane crime demographics.

Are there fundamentally two types of PrepHolezens?

I'm thinking: 1) the kaczynski types who want to go outdoors to escape other people, and 2) the Patagonia-advert types who want to attract like-minded friends so they can status flex their adventurous lifestyle.

      >Is PrepHole filled entirely with life washouts from /PrepHole/ that don't actually do anything outside, and then a few NPCs that went hiking one time in college and ate a bagged meal, and then told everyone at the office water cooler about it for the next five years?
God I fricking hope not. But given the quality of posts here lately it seems like that's all there is on this board. Actual outdoor content on PrepHole has been reduced to the photo threads at this point. The archery general is long dead, nobody will post in prospecting and rockhounding threads anymore, and the scuba general disappears more often than not now too.

I'm new to the board and I'm still LARPing big time, the most PrepHole place I've been in is this cowshit ridden place up a hill where you go with your family to have a picnic but I'm happy to know there are more people like me on this board. I thought that everyone was like Beer Gills, sucking live grubs out of tree bark for sustenance and peeing back into his hydration pack. That's so cool I want to do it too one day

I want to go PrepHole specifically to escape society and other people
ironically I prefer the big city to my hometown because in the big city nobody gives a frick, you could die and nobody will care, you're invisible
but there are still people around doing people things and it makes me feel sick. I hate cars and advertisements and stores and people with tattoos. Everyone looks so entrenched in this horrible plastic world and every day is a day I spend under unbearable pressure. I've tried so many times and wasted so much time and money trying to belong to a supposed slice of society, I've tried various hobbies, online, offline, I've gone to church, nothing works. I only feel OK when I'm somewhere away from people in the middle of trees with no manmade sounds and no manmade horrors around me, only the birds and the grass and maybe a stone wall from another age, covered in moss.

I've developed a small circle of hikers/campers thanks to a Meetup group in my area. The majority of the group is nothing but day hiking homosexuals but there are 10 people that plan out real multiple-day to two-week long hike/camp sessions along the AT earlier during the summer.

if youre gay, find gays, ask if they want to go for a hike. hiking dates are easy af and free. if youre straight, lose weight i assume. pretty much all there is to it.

That's just cope from people who invested a lot of money and identity into being uncomfortable. They can't stand that other people get to enjoy the same trails but also a hot meal, relaxing bath and soft bed.

none of them actually go outside

I ran a backpacking MeetUp group for several years. There weren’t any good groups specifically for it here. Like another Anon said, there were just day hiking groups. I went on several day hikes with them, and met a few people who expressed interest in overnight trips.

We asked the admins if we could host a meetup specifically for backpacking, and were denied. They didn’t give a reason. So I started my own group with those few people after a quick weekend trip. Our group swelled to ~120 people (though only about 30 were active members). A few longtime friends that I’d known from other stuff but had never been hiking joined as well.

We mostly did short trips. Organizing a big trip with people who are mostly just casual acquaintances is a pain in the ass. We did a few, but the logistics were always a b***h (specifically who’s driving and where to stay after a day of driving).

I eventually stepped away. After those two years (roughly), I decided I prefer to hike alone. It’s just much more fun and relaxing. I can go at my own speed, stop way fewer times, don’t need to find a campsite to accommodate more than one person, there are fewer injuries, I’m more likely to see wildlife…

    >but it’s lonely
Look, if your sad and not comfortable being in your day to day life, then yeah, you might need a hiking buddy so you don’t thrown yourself into a ravine. But I enjoy some alone time.

MeetUp and FB are your best bets.

I bought a large house and used to host really big NYE parties. I'd basically phone everyone I knew and tell them to come and to bring anyone they think should come. At one point I was renting out rooms to pay mortgage. Long story short this short QC woman with big breasts seduced me and now I'm married.

So basically I got married because I have a large house.

anime was ok up to the 90s and you could stretch it to the early 2000s then it quickly became this moronic soft porn thing for virgins, I'm sure moeshit existed before but it was not what anime meant at least in the west. paradoxically it was better when there was more horny shit and farservice, at least it catered to a more natural male instinct, having moeblobs do a random activity, this fricking "cute girls doing cute things" shit isn't something that dudes should watch, it's something for girls like My Little Pony. Only a deeply damaged male would watch moeshit
