Graduate up to more modern firearms by getting yourself a martini action and firing blackpowder cartridges
Then move to bolt action with bp cartridges
Then finally you can be brave and start using cordite

Start here. Black powder repeaters and early smokeless bolt actions look nice in their own right, and personally I like the greater mechanical complexity and quality of manufacture for both metal and wood parts.
Also prepare yourself to swallow the cost of stockpiling and/or reloading smokeless ammo.

You don't have to stop being in love with anything. These aren't mutually exclusive. Have modern guns for your CCW and your home defense roles, then pick whatever the hell you feel like for your toys. It's not like it has to be one or the other.

Black powder would be very useful if you're planning on bugging out. Make some camp deep innawoods where you'll only have wildlife to contend with. Still, doesn't hurt to multitask
      >cast bullets
      >beautiful wood and steel
You could still do these with modern guns, but you'd still need primers and smokeless powder for reloading.
Definitely don't blame you on the last reason, few of my guns have plastic furniture and all of them are steel. I've considered toying with black powder myself, but I don't have the facilities on hand for it yet.

SHTF doesn't mean the end of the world as we know it. There have been plenty of times in recent history where law and order have failed and anarchy reigned for a little while. Massive riots like in 1992, for example. Police were unable to respond to everything at once, leaving many citizens to fend for themselves.
Besides, it's not like nations have never collapsed before. It'll never happen until it does happen, and if you're caught with your pants down it may be over for you.

It’s mind blowing that you guys will stick to shit like ‘92 for your SHTF and think you need an arsenal when by all means the covid pandemic is exactly what a modern SHTF looks like and it’s better to own property and be self-sufficient with food and goods than to have a sick AR to make your closeted gay friends jealous.

Hurricane Katrina isn’t a SHTF, it’s a “the shit hit the fan so hard the fan was taken 30 miles away by the flood along with everything else we have”. People burning cop cars in front of a city hall and looting luxury brand stores in the downtown high end commercial sectors are also not SHTF, its social unrest. Not the same thing. See

bat shit and the piss are redundant.
      you're forgetting the charcoal.

      Anonymous

Yes I have made potassium nitrate out of my own urine as an experiment. Now I just convert sodium nitrate to potassium nitrate by combining it with potassium chloride. I use toilet paper to make fine charcoal. For sulfur I have to buy it or use rust from steel wool.

        Anonymous

You can leave the sulfur out of it but you need to up the charge which is not a problem for muzzleloading rifles but you cant do that for small arms

theres nothing wrong with being a black powder onylist
although i have to say, reloading brass cartridges is pretty fun in its own right, you should get a bolt action or falling block rifle like a sharps, and if you have a cap and ball revolver you could get a conversion cylinder with a loading gate for it, and the revolver should still take the original cylinder
but if i were in your place, i wouldnt waste my time with getting modern guns if they dont interest me, i would focus on getting a really handsome gun, like a wheellock rifle kit from the rifle shoppe with a heavy figure stock, and take it to a professional to have the stock carved and inlaid with silver or pre-ban ivory, and file patterns into the barrel
i myself am focusing on black powder cannons, which in terms of practicality outcompete nearly all modern small arms in an shtf scenario

i'll take it even further and turn 50 caliber steel balls into birdshot
in 6 pounds (which is what i can shoot in one load) of 50 caliber steel balls i can get 324 balls, which is roughly equivalent to the number of shot in 7 shot

yeah lead is going to be better than steel

steel is preferred in a cannon for a few different reasons, but the most important part is that it weighs less. with solid cannonballs over an inch you just cant use lead at all
i would rather have 324 steel balls compared to 210 lead balls in the same 6 pounds
if i wanted to have 324 lead balls then i would risk overloading the cannon, or i would have to use a smaller powder charge which would prevent the balls from having as much velocity
its also just a bit cheaper to use steel unless i cast my own, with steel it'd be about 16 cents a piece while with lead its more like 20 cents

    >How do I stop being in love with black powder and go into more practical guns?
Bullshit question Anon. BP stuff is just awesome.
Get yourself a modern gun just for the tool/work side of weapon usage like home defense. If you love black powder for the fun side of firearms then there's no reason to change this.

Also keep this shtf stuff in mind: Depending on the scenario (e.g. a global EMP event) supplies of regular ammo will dry up within a few years. You would want to have a gun to stay safe during these years but after that you'd be the fricking Bullet Farmer incarnate by being able to make your own black powder, guns, fuses etc.

    >can make my own powder and fineness
Lol no, homemade black powder is far from being as good as industrial one. You don't have the equipment to refine it again and again.
    >make my own caps
Lol no, try it and see if it works, protip : it doesn't. Plenty of videos already debunked the myth of reloading caps and primers. This isn't possible without industrial equipment.
Yeah, my thoughts is that you don't own one.

More BP is made by private people than from the commercial producers. Pretty easy to make good powder on par with the best commercial.
Plenty of people make their own caps and some make their own primers. One of the major companies making primers even got their start from one guy making them in a small shed.

Why does it matter that you stop loving black powder? If you have 1 handgun you're willing to carry and 1 long gun then you are prepared for anything a civilian might face, after that you can continue buying only what you like.

    >I know I will die if SHTF though.
Your chances don't improve much from having slightly better equipment. Your chances will significantly improve if you have a good team/squad/group/community/clan/etc. to cooperate and coordinate with.

You don't stop being in love with BP, anon. If you know, you know. Figure out how to effectively split your time between training (maintaining competence with more modern weapons) and fun (turning BP into smoke) and you'll be fine.
