This is my EDC after a few months of loading and ejecting a round when I clear and put the gun away for the day.
Does the ammunition just suck ass or do I just have to deal with this if I want to clear the weapon when I'm done carrying? I know I could just leave it loaded but that's not an option for me.
you could keister it
You're trying to fight physics. Here's an idea. Stop fricking racking out the round and leave it loaded in your holster.
Alternatively, cycle the rounds in your magazine(s) for even wear.
figured as much, just wanted to make sure it wasn't shit ammo
The constant slamming of the round in to battery will always cause this, even on the most strongly crimped rounds. I would recommend cycling the rounds in the mag. I have found that to be most successful for my carry gun. Also, sorry for coming across as rude in my initial post.
all good, i understand the nature of /k/
Nah if it were shit ammo, it would have done that after the 3rd loading. The crimp in the thin case wall can only provide so much force. Sub compacts tend to have less ideal feed-ramp angles from mag to chamber. Because of that, this happens.
If you have an external extractor you can drop the round in the chamber, drop the slide, and insert the mag. If it's an internal extractor, don't do that.
What difference does the extractor location make?
you can damage an extractor by snapping it over a rim. extractors werent meant to do that ever. internal extractors tend to be on older designs whos designers never even considered the possibility of stupidity.
Maybe with a 1911. That's not an issue with any kind of sprung pivoting extractor.
this x10
stop being a fricktard and stop making stupid fricking threads asking for answers to issues with obvious answers
Why the frick are you clearing your weapon everyday? Why is it not loaded and ready to bang 24/7?
I’m afraid I’ll pull the trigger when I’m sleep walking so I unload it every night.
Has this been an issue for you in the past?
No, because I always unload it before I go to bed.
have you ever sleep-loaded your gun?
can you sleep-unlock a combo safe?
Not the OP, I've slept drove. Went to bed and woke up about 30 miles away.
This homie is possessed by a ghost and doesn't even know it.
>get full nights sleep in own bed
>never wake up in a strange place, miles from home, creating my own adventure ARG
ngmi bros
NDs are a natural part of gun ownership so don't sweat it
It's the circle of life.
Why don’t you just lock the magazine up?
There would still be a round in the chamber anon
Yeah, but nobody hits the target with their first shot while sleepwalking.
That's a very fair point
So you're just going to forego potentially hilarious stories for safety? Super gay.
Bad take on gun safety
>he can't find a mag, load it and rack the slide while sleepwalking
amateur
There are a portion of suicides that are attributed to sleep walking.
Start re-enacting The Deer Hunter in your dreams.
I feel you pain my man. I sleep walk occationally still but it's either getting more rare or im getting better at ending up in the same place.
However I also get the hallucination part of sleep paralysis, just I can still move as a result of the sleep walking malfunction.
I cant keep a loaded gun within arms reach of my bed because I 100% would shoot at some of the halucinations in the 2-3 seconds it takes for me to realize there is actually nothing there.
When I was a kid, I woke up in a tree in my parents back yard about 10 feet off the ground once. Thankfully in a relatively stable spot so I didnt fall.
Dryfire.
I used to constantly unload every day. There is no need to do this. Put your carry gun In a quick access safe so you can get it and use it if necessary.
>months
How have you gone months without training at the range?
i shoot a lot of ball at the range and know where my zero is for my carry ammo, I still like to shoot a box of my carry when I go.
if youve been doing that with the same round its probably a dud by now. theres no exact number of chamberings where a round will die but there have been numerous cops who did that shit for over a month so 30+ then the round became a dud since all the primer compound had been knocked loose.
theres also the overpressure from bullet setback to consider.. if you are hell bent on unloading your gun have like an empty box of ammo and every time you unchamber that round moves to the box. when that 50 round box is full go shoot that ammo at the range.
>loading and ejecting a round when I clear and put the gun away
Just drop the mag and discharge the firearm into your clearing log.
I'm.impressed. I have yet to manage this and I unchamber roughly 3-4 times a week. Granted, I rotate rounds in the mag every 2 weeks, but still. Are you just sling shotting the slide every time you rechamber, or was this more
i carry every time I go out and clear when I get home because i have children who know how to use weapons because i take them to the range, but afraid of stupid shit like them showing their friends when im at work etc..., so it's just daily carrying of me clearing after going out for a few months, i toss the round when it gets this way
Dad here. I'd recommend a small, simplex safe for your primary edc pistol(s). Fast access, hell of a lot of permutations, and you can change the combination every quarter if you are paranoid.
If this ever happens to yer 40S&W round absolutely do not fire it. I haven’t looked at the pressure curves with 9mm or 45ACP but probably similar issue
.40S&W is way more extreme, still a bad idea though
if you drop the round into the chamber and then release the slide it should prevent this mostly or completely
it's the round hammering against the feed ramp that causes this I believe
Only factual and practical answer ITT
And you get +1 in your gun
No it doesnt, the bullet doesnt fully seat, the slide still slams into it.
As some who cuts chambers, you're wrong. Do you even know what a throat is? Or headspace? Or jump-to-lands?
As some one who is a machinist, have taken measurements before and after doing it your way, I can easily tell that you're wrong. I did just what the OP did long ago, then I did it your way and was curious if the bullet would begin to creep back, which is did. Go take a round and measure it with digital caliber, then go and insert the round and then drop the slide. Do this 20 times and then measure it again, you will see the difference.
>you will see the difference
You may see some difference with some ammo. You won't ever make it as bad as it is on the OP pic, no matter the ammo and how many times you do it.
Then you have what is called a short throat. The bullet should not be contacting the lead yet. If it does, it can lead to dangerous pressure spikes in some cartridges. The case is the only thing that should be making contact with the barrel.
It's not a rimmed cartridge, anon.
>how do i stop myself from literally hammering a projectile deeper into the case over and over and over again on purpose
gee whiz
Stop clearing the round when you put the gun away for the day. You idiot.
Well that's fricking terrifying.
Just WD-40 the chamber.
>lock slide to the rear
>drop round into chamber
>ride the slide forward and manually lever the extractor over the case rim
>press check to ensure the extractor grabbed the round
>make sure your slide goes back into battery.
If your carry rounds are getting that fricked up, you've kept them around for too long. I cycle my carry rounds at least every other month, and shoot the old stuff when I go to the range. You should be shooting at least a single magazine's worth of your carry ammo occasionally. Most self defense ammo shoots a bit different than ball, which most people use for practice. You need to practice with what you actually plan on using every once and awhile.
