I really don't get why they use the SKS as their ceremonial rifle, the SVT just has such a presence.

Well there are a lot of more of them for starters.

There were 1.6 million SVT-40s made and probably most of those were lost or damaged during the War. The USSR made 2.7 million SKSs and none of them were used in combat excepting the ones that were exported.

Every infantryman is cannon fodder, even SOF guys and other ground forces are disposable

Basically this. It's all an economic calculation and the value of an infantryman is rather low. Which is why you chose the more moronic and disposable strata of society for the job. You can tell by the imagery used to recruit them too.

        >Which is why you chose the more moronic and disposable strata of society for the job
Depends on country and time period.

        >moronic
        yeah maybe
        >disposable
No. The vast majority of western citizens do not meet the standards of military service due to mental illness, obesity and criminality.Depending on the country a few thousand dead 20 year old men could have disastrous implications for the future.

This might have been the idea in the medieval era when all you needed was enough weapons and a big mob to have a formidable force. Today's infantry require much more training, funding, equipment, and reliability to do their jobs than any era before them. If we use the lowest of the low morons with borderline human IQs, then we'd be where Russia is right now. Funny as it is to point and laugh at grunts for being numbskulled morons, you can't run an effective modern army with the base level infantry being dumber than a batch of first graders.

How is a Russian grunt more cannon fodder than any other grunt?

Their expendability is much higher compared to other grunts, even if all grunts have a non-zero expendability value.

This is a trash thread but whatever...
If you are told to advance on a position that has not seen any preparation by your aviation and artillery, if you have 0 information on what is happening 100 meters from you, if you are supplied with a rifle and 3 magazines worth of ammunition in a plastic bag etc etc

I just realised my dad was trough all of those...

Jesus, look how his right leg folds in under his own weight when he tries to stand up. Did that little grenade seriously rip his leg up that bad?

Here's a good example of shrapnel fricking people up. The guy in pink can't walk anymore because it tore his ankles.

Just so people understand, bullets are aerodynamic so it flies through the body. Shrapnel is a an irregular shape not meant to pass easily so it cause more damage to the body.

My dad was in ‘nam and said he realized it when they were sent on “patrol” through a route that was known for NVA ambushes (as in almost a 100% guarantee of a firefight and multiple casualties being sustained) in a valley that was absolutely crawling with NVA. Of course they got hit hard and took around 50% casualties with many of those dying and my dad hardly making it out alive after being hit with RPG shrapnel only to almost die again when the chopper he was out in got raked by gunfire.
Later on he learned that they just sent his platoon out there to draw out the NVA for arty and shit. They were obviously going to take incredibly heavy casualties since almost every time US troops went that way they got fricked up bad. Plus with the terrain it’s guaranteed the NVA would be taking the first shots which, at close range like they were is pretty much guaranteed death for the guys up front.

Military's are most effective when there is trust, loyalty and belief in a common cause from the top of the chain of command to the bottom.
America will pay a harsh penalty for tolerating the fools in Washington DC.
America's national civilian / military command structure has no one serious leading it.
    - Joe Biden
    - Kamala Harris
    - Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the House
    - Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader
    - Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense
    - General Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

None of these people have the wisdom, courage or integrity you would want to lead a country in turbulent times. The US State Department does not even select applicants based on merit besides skin color and LGBTQ+ pedophile criteria. The US State Department and most of the federal government is comprised of 30 year olds who have done nothing besides attend liberal university prior to joining the federal government
