HMS Diamond shoots down Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile

I'm just as surprised as you are, frankly. Officially, Sea Viper doesn't have anti-ballistic missile capability. But we all know NATO tends to undersell its capabilities.

>U.S Central Command released the following update:
>“At 11:51 a.m. (Sanaa time) on April 24, a coalition vessel successfully engaged one anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched from Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas in Yemen over the Gulf of Aden. The ASBM was likely targeting the MV Yorktown, a U.S.-flagged, owned, and operated vessel with 18 U.S. and four Greek crew members. There were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or commercial ships.
>Separately, between 12:07 pm and 1:26 pm, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) successfully engaged and destroyed four airborne unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) over Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
>It was determined that the ASBM and UAVs presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”

How long til the aster block 1 upgrades are completed? Don't want to run out of whatever missile is doing the work because of bad procurement timing.

That'll be Aster 30, and we don't know how many were built
initial contract was for 100 per ship, in both 15/30 variants

It carries the aster 30 missiles and as wiki states:

      >The Aster 30 Block 1 and Block 1 NT were designed to counter ballistic missiles.

So the do officially counter ballistic missiles

Behind times grampa, the block 1 has been in service since 2022
In 2022, the United Kingdom announced a series of upgrades to its Type 45 destroyers.
Not that this doesnt say that the upgrades commenced in 2022 only that they announced them.
Since block 1 was officially in service in italy since 2016 i think the odds of them testing the block one before 2022 is highly likely.

eee that's not a lot. Israel's tally for ballistic missile tracks exceeds that. Need more spam, or 'Ceptor-ER if the new announcement from italy involves new capabilities (haven't read it yet).

There's no way the RN bought only 600 Asters, the problem is unlike the USA they don't publish ammo purchase info. (I suspect the US probably only publishes theirs because they buy in such large quantities that the $ amount triggers some obscure disclosure rule somewhere.)

          Anonymous

The US approach is to withhold capabilities but disclose quantities. Exact numbers are provided for most things, if you care to find them in the budget books. Ex. the number of NGSW rifles is known, whereas the UK equivalent requires an MP to ask in PMQs.

We know that the Type 45s have the usual NATO data links so in theory there's nothing stopping AEGIS from giving them targeting data if they're on the same networks.

Its not really all that surprising tbh. Sea Viper is capable of intercepting very fast, very high altitude targets. What is a ballistic missile if not a very fast, very high altitude target?

I'd be interested to know what phase the missile was in when it was intercepted as that plays a pretty significant role in judging the SV capabilities in the ABM regard.
