Technically not possible within the nearest time. Soviet stockpiles are large and are usually in tens of thousands range. Even with all of the fricked up losses that would generally lend them at 1/2 of the stockpile gone. Thus, the main reason for using shitty tech is the local bottlenecks with reactivating shit from storage. They basically use "at least something", while taking time to activate better gear.

      [...]

Partially true. AFU can kill those boxes, it's pretty much about hoping that their stockpiles will outlast western support.

        >that their stockpiles will outlast western support.

lots of those vehicles are just rust buckets

          Anonymous

          >lots of those vehicles are just rust buckets
Rust is less on an issue honestly, even with how shitty stuff got stored in ussr/russia.
The process of getting stuff mothballed - "konservatsiya" (i.e. preserving, as in with food getting store in jars) usually involves the usage of something called "push-salo" (pushechnoe salo, "cannon lard"), a thick lubricant covers stuff to protect it from rust and seizing up.
A way bigger issue is stuff getting robbed/dismantled for stuff to sell off, i.e. moving the cables and setting them as copper to a metal dealer, stuff like that. Or hidden cannibalization where the guys responsible for reactivating the tanks use parts from one to fix another, but it never gets logged anywhere correctly, basically creating thousand of phantom tanks which exist on paper, but are partially salvaged for parts.
But even taking that into account, let's say 50% of the stuff won't be possible to reactivate, it still leaves a metric shit ton of stuff available. I.e. have 20k of BMP in storage -> 50% impossible to reactive due various shit -> still 10k available -> still a lot of potential danger for AFU.
A bigger thing is that reactivation isn't magically instant, it takes time, hence the shitboxes we see are a result of it. When a plant works and can churn out 800 tanks in a year of reactivates shit, but you need more, then you have another plant got an reactivate something else, which uses other parts and so on, hence you have T-62s being reactivated because the T-72 reactivation line is bottlenecked. Then you go and start reactivating A-55s, because that can happen in parallel to others and so on.

            Anonymous

If they have 10k BMPs left then at the current loss rates they will have barely any in 2 years time. They are burning these stockpiles fast

I know it is not the exact same, but I think it is helpful to look at data on motor vehicles. About 10-15 percent of vehicles leave the market every year due to attrition (mechanical faults, collisions, wear and tear, etc..). Those between 10 and 20 years old the highest rates of loss and it declines thereafter. Although most vehicles have an expiration date, car enthusiasts can and do save the special ones. That is why you see a lot of rare Mustangs saved as a percentage of those produced, but far fewer of the basic ones. Cheap, mass market, vehicles with mechanical faults have the lowest percentage of retention while high end vehicles are saved at the highest rates. I'm confident we'll see the same things with military vehicles. Expensive Tanks and Planes that were produced and rebuilt until the 2000's will have a greater percentage of serviceability compared to cheap IFVs, Trucks, and other vehicles which might have stopped being produced in the 1970's.

Example: USSR built around 20K T-72 Tanks. Of those, maybe 6K were available at the start of the invasion (30%). 40K BMP-1's might have been built but if only 20% were serviceable due to older age, less effort in maintenance, etc..) there would only be 8K available, . Even though there were 2X as many BMPs built, the end result might be far closer in actual fieldable units due to attrition. That is before a shot is even fired.

Obviously these are made up numbers, but I think they help give an explanation as to why certain vehicle types are seemingly in such short supply compared to others. Combined with higher loss rates for IFVs compared to Tanks in the war, I think it is reasonable to assume Russia might struggle with fielding support vehicles which are needed in greater numbers, suffered higher attrition in the post cold war era, and are being lost at higher rates in Ukraine.

Their grandparents didn’t back away when faced with almost certain death against the Nazi’s, so why should they? I'm going to answer this. They are not told they are storming the same place, they are told to storm the area ahead of the yesterday attack, and the previous ones are fortifiing their gains and defend. Sorta like leapfrogging.
They dont care about the wrecks, because they just think it was a battle, but its over now. Until its too late. They are told the Z markings are psychological warfare in the destroyed vehicles

Russians keep the weapons and grenades away from mobiks precisely for this reason. That is why in trench storming videos, you see Ukrainian Trench-raiders gunning down fat 45 year old men running around like lemmings without guns. They are only given weapons right before an attack.

A combination of what anons have already said. Also when our minds want something to be true, we easily become delusional. We want to be heroic like our grandparents, we want to fight nazis like our grandparents, we want to be patriots like our grandparents. We ARE defending against evil NATO and we ARE liberating ukraine from the CIA.

They don't know for sure, but MAYBE this is all true. So they go for it.
Also a lot of soldiers sign up for money, but can't back out when they get their reality check thanks to the combination of potential punihsment + peer pressure. Who wants to be a coward? Who wants to let your fellow countrymen do the hard work? We humans are very sheepish after all.

During a battle you are doing as much as you can to stop the enemy. Which one do you use your limited resources on? An enemy approaching or an enemy standing still? They destroy the broken down tanks later because they don't have the leisure to do it during the fight, the ammo/drone used to destroy a tank could be used to kill an attacker.

The vast majority of those drones fail — misses, duds, running out of juice, jamming, countermeasures, mistakes, etc and so on. Ukraine is SWARMING with drones but only a small fraction hit something — we only get to see the highlight reels

Struggle for frontline leadership. Two Tanks each seek the right to smoke, so they scuffle until one backs down and lets the more dominant one brew up first. One the first has achieved turretus orbitus, then the lesser tank will launch, though often with less fanfare...

War Thunder players are unironically more competent. This war is a fricking eyeopener. I will never again complain about bad guys in movies acting too stupid.

Because in War Thunder you aren't looking through the tank's optics or a slit. You're looking at the tank, from behind and have ability to control the camera. So it's easier to see other vehicles and obstacles.

I said elsewhere that this looks exactly what you would get if you took some rookies who got conscripted last september or so, and put them through the bootcamp and give them some basic training in tank use and then just ship them out to a battlefield without giving them any time in combined arms training.

Like they would have had about 4 months worth of training at the barracks (so they know how to drive a tank and maybe shoot the cannon) and then had been shipped off to the grinder and told "you learn best from real experience".
That is what this looks like. A bunch of rookies on their first mission, where they have been given poor training, poor instructions on the mission and just been sent off without their officers. They don't have a clue what they are doing. And it shows.

And knowing Russia, this is exactly what has happened.

      Anonymous

      >That is what this looks like. A bunch of rookies on their first mission,

      and last lol

But yeah, the Russian tactics are just nuts, because they are designed almost perfectly to waste as much men and vehicles as possible. The entire Russian system is self-destructive.

        Anonymous

Yeah, it's a zerg rush at this point. Get as many men and fling them at the wall, hoping that somethign sticks.

Russia does not have enough capacity to properly train new troops in these volumes, so they just go with the good old "just ship them to the front, order them to run that way. If you don't get a gun, pick it up from someone who already died" tactic. You don't need much training for that.

Just get some rusty T-54 from the cold storage, give the driver a few days of training so he can get it moving, give the gunner enough training that he know how to aim and fire the main gun, give them half a tank of gas and point it towards enemy lines. At this point they don't seem to be bothering with even ERA anymore. They are not expected to come back.

That's the reason why any talk about "A million men mobilization" is just fantasy. They don't have the organizational capacity to handle such amounts of men. Not to mention to equip and arm them, feed them or shelter them. Or enough officers to give them orders and instructions where to go and what to do. Without the ability to handle all that for a million men, you don't have an army. You have a massive horde of brigands with no food, no place to sleep and no idea what they are supposed to do. That is just a disaster waiting to happen.

I know we've seen Donbabweans and Lugandans with Maxims and other ancient shit but what's specifically the oldest (confirmed) vehicle fielded by actual RF forces in Ukraine? Were T-55s the oldest so far?

Some old lend-lease trucks were spotted in the ongoing debacle around Avdiivka. Those and BTR-50s.

      Anonymous

All of the T-55s were of the A variant so built in either the 60s or 70s so technically speaking the BTR-50s and even Grads may have them beaten

Maxims is the oldest stuff in use. But this is still good for defense in a trench war.
at least one 152 mm howitzer M1943 (D-1)
      and an
      130 mm towed field gun M1954 (M-46)
      was spotted
      also old trucks like GAZ-51
