Hi?

Hi PrepHole, any ideas on how to fix my typewriter?

>my ? @ and fraction keys are getting stuck like pic related
>they don't return unless I actually grab the typewriter arm
>getting wedged in between the guide/vibrator
Video: https://youtube.com/shorts/FhV5NoNbctQ?si=tCXibLVinsW0KLt4

Seems like the arms are warped/crooked but 1. don't know if I can just unbend them and 2. wonder how could they have gotten so twisted in the first place.

Any ideas?

I want some suggestions as most purely-mechanical things follow the same principles.

most purely mechanical things need oil. i'd start there before i went around bending things.

Clean off old oil, release things that have rusted together, add new oil
Worked for most of my 1900s stuff
If you see adjustment screws anywhere figure out what they do and then adjust if needed. They used a lot of adjustment screws and oversized holes back then to compensate for machining tolerances. If it has molded metal parts don’t touch them too much there may not be a replacement.

The carriage needs lubrication or is pushing on something as most letters are way too close. The lowercase a is bent upward, the e downward, but can be adjusted on most machines

Since it's 2023 and everyone knows how to find info in seconds what did your visits to typewriter communities tell you when you posted all relevant details including your make, model and serial number (if that model is serially numbered)?

        https://filthyplaten.com/2015/07/02/a-quick-review-of-online-typewriter-communities/

r/typewriters has over 30K members and is fairly active.

It took me about a minute to do what you should have known to instantly do for yourself, so why didn't you? We need a /spoonfeedtehhelpless board

not OP but reddit is fricking insufferable. although I would rather see OP frick this thing up, then post pics of it so we can all have a laugh.

Insufferability is no reason to act like a girl. Emotion is weakness. Information is good.

I choose information and I ignore emotion. Stop being weak.

How deliciously quaint. Once a Redditor always a Redditor btw

Of course. I've been here since 2007 as well. Reddit spacing is arguable in all cases except for one: an extra line break after the post number. You wouldn't know because you weren't here, tourist. Even if you were here since day 1 of PrepHole you're still a newbie.

              中出し

Reddit (at least in 2013 when i last used it) absolutely did not insert double spaces for you if you press enter once.
It uses markdown, and in markdown a single newline character is treated exactly the same as a space.
Pressing enter once doesn't do anything at all and won't even separate the paragraph. [ENTER] It will continue on the same line as if you pressed the spacebar.
That /misc/ post reeks of butthurt newbie spreading misinfo trying to cover his own ass after getting called out for his reddit spacing

They get twisted by being stuck from bad librication or dirt and some gorilla slamming the keys hard to unstuck them

why dont you just oil it and unbend the arms manually and see if the problem persists

Update : managed to get the keys to strike properly by using pliers+hands to bend them more into place, using the corresponding left-side keys as a guide to how they should be aligned. I bought some mineral spirits online and I'll be going over trying to clean everything. Thanks PrepHole!

Make sure that if you clean the spirits off with water to dry it asap and get it oiled again because clean old metals rust almost instantly in air because of the visible pitting

Also disassemble to avoid trapping water in. And good luck, I’ve wanted to restore a typewriter but haven’t found the time

    Use gun oil, **never** WS-40.

WD40 is good to clean with, but it does leave a nice light oil residue. frick gun oil, it costs more than 3 in 1 oil and doesnt come with the nice extendable spout/straw.
