Have penal battalions ever been a good substitute for trained or even volunteer or hell even mobilised forces?

Have penal battalions ever been a good substitute for trained or even volunteer or hell even mobilised forces? Because you have to assume that a battalion of prisoners needs to have a substantial amount of people to 'enforce' those prisoners. Because what is stopping them just shooting their enforcers and going 'frick this, we're leaving'?

That was a reserve/further behind trench line. They weren't expecting contact with anything. That's why three guys just get shredded sitting in a hole

Yeah that's no excuse, no western military took troops rifles away in Afgnistan or Iraq because they were stationed in a Main operating base, no matter how REMF or POG they were. Taking weapons off your soldiers in reserve trenches is just stupid and speaks volumes about the state of the troops

The trouble there is that prisoners are pretty good at squirreling away contraband, and there's a lot of free contraband in the chaos of an army on the move, or even worse an army after a battle. Kicking a salvaged rifle underneath a couple sandbags while the overseer is dead or distracted or hiding in a hole fifty yards away from the fight is child's play. And hell, even if they aren't trying to hide anything away, stuff can be overlooked by everyone for a while.

Unironically might not make a difference for russian combat effectiveness as russian troops at this point in the war are just various flavours of armed hobo. The real issue with penal troops is you can't leave them on the front forever to die without them deserting, but if you rotate them to rear areas for r&r they will act like even bigger thieving raping subhumans than regular russian troops.

The slave armies like the Mameluks were trained from birth to be soldiers, they were not the same kind of slaves that you would have in the US South. Professional slave armies often rebelled and overtook their rulers and became strong empires off the back of it. Rounding up the murderers from Russian prisons won't have the same effect.

Janissaries are an interesting case because they aren't criminals or normal slaves, they were kidnapped boys trained to be soldiers from a young age. They're much closer to the star wars clone army.

Janissaries might have been technical slaves, but they were an "elite" martial social caste.

Prisoners fighting in a defensive war where they have reason beyond freedom to fight can be a useful recruiting tool. Penal battalions as a punitive or forced measure are virtually always terrible.

  22. 11 months ago

People are confusing slaves (and prisoners) of antiquity with those of today. Slavery used to be akin to wageys today: people forced to work for a specific owner to survive, with the potential for advancement if they performed well. It was very different from chattel slavery. That's not to say they weren't abused or rest at the bottom of the class structure, but the conditions were simply different.

They also didn't have much desire to defect to the enemy or surrender because they would just go from slave in nation A to slave in nation B. Worst case, you could be tortured and executed for defecting or surrendering as a show of force by the opposing sovereign as they have an incentive to ensure slaves as a class are kept oppressed.

Additionally, being a free man might not be any better than slavery depending on the situation and many times could be worse. Earth tillers of ancient Egypt were free people, technically, but they were subordinate in all the same ways a slave would be to all the classes above them. Their land would be owned by land lords, their harvests confiscated by priests and magistrates, their valuables taken by pharaohs raising taxes.

To a slave in the army, performing well was the best of bad options by far. This is just not the case for you average Russian penal battalion member. The worst case scenario of defecting would be getting sent back to Russia in a prisoner swap.

        The return of tank destroyers.

Basically an MT-LB with the passenger compartment cut open and a 100mm T-12 AT gun mounted in it with some shielding plates around it. Ukraine's been making them since the MT-LB is probably the shittiest AFV they have, but they don't want to just waste the chassis. So they've been cranking these out and giving them to TDF troops so they can give the actual tanks to the front liners.
