Have penal battalions ever been a good substitute for trained or even volunteer or hell even mobilised forces? Because you have to assume that a battalion of prisoners needs to have a substantial amount of people to 'enforce' those prisoners. Because what is stopping them just shooting their enforcers and going 'frick this, we're leaving'?
By not letting troops have weapons I til they are under attack, apprently thats what's happened in the trench video going around today
That was a reserve/further behind trench line. They weren't expecting contact with anything. That's why three guys just get shredded sitting in a hole
>tfw that poor guy who was hiding in the corner, should have said 'I surrender'
Yeah that's no excuse, no western military took troops rifles away in Afgnistan or Iraq because they were stationed in a Main operating base, no matter how REMF or POG they were. Taking weapons off your soldiers in reserve trenches is just stupid and speaks volumes about the state of the troops
>and speaks volumes about the state of the troops
And also:
>speaks VOLUMES to the troops
Nobody can nat hear that message clear. Except, apparently, vatniks.
>tfw that poor guy who was hiding in the corner, should have said 'I surrender'
This outcome is better though.
>That was a reserve/further behind trench line. They weren't expecting contact with anything.
Yeah, so they didn't let them have their rifles, because they can't trust the mobiks with them.
>I dun know what "wAr" means
Dude anon ... frickin' WAR. It's kind'a serious shit. You're in-theater *anywhere*, you are at frickin' WAR. You be geared and hands-on weapon, no sleep, no relax, at all time or you dead an' sheeeit.
> t. - Ya' ain't gun make it, kid. Keep clear of me and mine.
The trouble there is that prisoners are pretty good at squirreling away contraband, and there's a lot of free contraband in the chaos of an army on the move, or even worse an army after a battle. Kicking a salvaged rifle underneath a couple sandbags while the overseer is dead or distracted or hiding in a hole fifty yards away from the fight is child's play. And hell, even if they aren't trying to hide anything away, stuff can be overlooked by everyone for a while.
That's why you put a unit of Chechens behind them to serve as a blocking force.
Who do you put behind the Chechens?
Mongols or Timurids.
Ummm the British Empire.
Who do you put behind the Mongols or Timirids?
This. Buryats and Tuvans are batshit enough to beef with chrchens on a regular basis in the army, from what I've read.
>Storm-Z
Sounds like a knock-off Power Rangers show
I was more thinking of the Volkssturm.
fr. Naming a battalion after the Z blitzkrieg is very on the nose. Fascists aren't known for subtlety.
Frick off Redditor, kek. I can't wait for AZOV to have at them.
Sounds like a British rapper
yeah the OP's filename mentions that kek, exactly what I thought.
Didn't even notice kek

Unironically might not make a difference for russian combat effectiveness as russian troops at this point in the war are just various flavours of armed hobo. The real issue with penal troops is you can't leave them on the front forever to die without them deserting, but if you rotate them to rear areas for r&r they will act like even bigger thieving raping subhumans than regular russian troops.
>various flavours of armed hobo
I need to watch that movie again
Who cares about being effective.
The real penal battalion is the friends we made along the way.
Is it possible to get even more gay rapes?
Only with teamwork
I've wanted to post that sooooo many times. But I've already got an above-average ban count so I never dared risk it, even though I downloaded it here.
>Have penal battalions ever been a good substitute for trained or even volunteer or hell even mobilised forces?
Pretty sure they are better than untrained conscripts. You know the guy who stabbed his mom will at least pull the trigger. Can you say the same for the funko pop collector?
I don't know why you think a weakling funko pop collector with terrible taste in all things would be incapable of killing.
A modern penal legion would be indistinguishable from most professional armies historically.
inb4 thread devolves into discussing storm-z genitalia
Hehe he said penal
>Have penal battalions ever been a good substitute for trained or even volunteer or hell even mobilised forces?
Uh, yeah, this shit has existed for thousands of years. There were entire slave armies, in fact. Read a book you stupid Black person
>clearly referring to modern armies when he mentions guns
>clearly mentions in comparison to trained armies
>HUUUUR DURRRRRRRRR
The slave armies like the Mameluks were trained from birth to be soldiers, they were not the same kind of slaves that you would have in the US South. Professional slave armies often rebelled and overtook their rulers and became strong empires off the back of it. Rounding up the murderers from Russian prisons won't have the same effect.
but russia is a literal gangster nation where the leads are mob bosses in everything but name. Prison gang upheavles is the exact place these kinds of colonies experience violent power change from
Historical slave armies aren't a bunch of dirlewanger morons you stupid jizz sucking c**t
The most famous example ended up as a class of people with an immense amount of influence over the governance of the Ottoman state
Or maybe you're thinking of antiquity with the famous rebellions of slaves, almost entirely consisting of men enslaved while at war, whos uprisings got dicked
Janissaries are an interesting case because they aren't criminals or normal slaves, they were kidnapped boys trained to be soldiers from a young age. They're much closer to the star wars clone army.
Janissaries might have been technical slaves, but they were an "elite" martial social caste.
this. poor serbs. why does no one think of the poor serbs?
>Janissaries might have been technical slaves, but they were an "elite" martial social caste.
Same for the Mamelukes, and to some extent, the Medieval German Ministerialis (a non-free noble).
No. The only effective prisoners are ones who committed minor crimes and volunteered to serve in a regular unit
Penal battalions are not effective. But then again, the Russian military is one big penal battalion. Or was that penile?
>stormzy
Who would win Stormzy or Storm Z?
Stormzy is barely even grime.
For grime it gotta be Esco.

HEY! ANON!! And. anons in general.
Could you be so kind as to post a youtube video link at the end of posts like tat? They're wonderful, but I'm not an anon who knows every lyric and every tune ever written. Please send me to an authentic version of an original ..? 'Kay? I'd like to enjoy these more than once out of every ten or twelve times. This one was actually obvious enough that a casual Creedence Clearwater Revival fan got it ... but it's pissing me off I can't enjoy so many of the others.
Thank you.

Wagner has not had access to convicts for half an year now - they all go to these new penal formations under Shoigu and Kiril.
Kiril wants really hard to be the new Prigozhin.
machiavelli said auxiliaries were worse than mercenaries, he didn't even bother to bring up penal troops because that was silly 500 years ago
>Storm-Z
state your name, cuz
Prisoners fighting in a defensive war where they have reason beyond freedom to fight can be a useful recruiting tool. Penal battalions as a punitive or forced measure are virtually always terrible.
People are confusing slaves (and prisoners) of antiquity with those of today. Slavery used to be akin to wageys today: people forced to work for a specific owner to survive, with the potential for advancement if they performed well. It was very different from chattel slavery. That's not to say they weren't abused or rest at the bottom of the class structure, but the conditions were simply different.
They also didn't have much desire to defect to the enemy or surrender because they would just go from slave in nation A to slave in nation B. Worst case, you could be tortured and executed for defecting or surrendering as a show of force by the opposing sovereign as they have an incentive to ensure slaves as a class are kept oppressed.
Additionally, being a free man might not be any better than slavery depending on the situation and many times could be worse. Earth tillers of ancient Egypt were free people, technically, but they were subordinate in all the same ways a slave would be to all the classes above them. Their land would be owned by land lords, their harvests confiscated by priests and magistrates, their valuables taken by pharaohs raising taxes.
To a slave in the army, performing well was the best of bad options by far. This is just not the case for you average Russian penal battalion member. The worst case scenario of defecting would be getting sent back to Russia in a prisoner swap.
>Storm-Z
The WW2 analogues just keep coming.
What am I looking at?
a bootleg nashorn
The return of tank destroyers.
Basically an MT-LB with the passenger compartment cut open and a 100mm T-12 AT gun mounted in it with some shielding plates around it. Ukraine's been making them since the MT-LB is probably the shittiest AFV they have, but they don't want to just waste the chassis. So they've been cranking these out and giving them to TDF troops so they can give the actual tanks to the front liners.
Forgot the fricking pic, of course
