I used a deli slicer for at least 200 days combined with no mistake or injury. years later I used one again and due to my complacency I got my thumb pretty good with it.

you walk your whole life and one bad fall after decades of "walking experience" can really frick you up.

That happens to people who quit riding motorcycles to raise kids and then buy a new bike when the nest is empty.
If you think you can pick up where you left off, you're gonna have a bad time.

There is a reasonable limit to both. If you have cleared the chamber and removed the magazine, there is do danger to anybody in fingering the trigger. The problem is with morons who don't do the above or think they did due to their defective brain.
It does get kinda tiring when somebody in a video about showcasing a gun either points a museum piece at the camera (or doesn't) and there are heaps of comments about that instead of talking about the actual gun.

Why would the pistol be clearing leather in public anyway without a good reason? That the "fricking around" part that directly precedes the "finding out" part.

I get the idea but it's all fun and games till you blow your foot off. Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men, but most people are fools. OP's friend probably thought of himself as an infallible pro, up until he shot his dog

This. I've been working around power tools for my whole life. The newbies are usually careful, it's the old boomers who think they're invincible because they've been using the tool for so long they get careless and then oops, there went a finger to the bandsaw.
