Has anyone ever tried putting a c clip or something in the area I have circled?

Has anyone ever tried putting a c clip or something in the area I have circled? I'm not thinking about trying to retain the dust cover hinge there, but the EPC got me thinking: couldn't we just block the range of movement by adding a c clip there, and thus get half the benefit of an epc for like... 5¢?

Maybe a c clip isn't the right answer, might need to be an actual washer or something, but it seems like that would be a much cheaper way to achieve the same thing the EPC does.

It's that all the EPC does? Just blocking the fricking dust cover from moving every slightly less forward? That's what they are charging $50+ for?

Op here: no, it stops it from opening as wide. The screenshot I'm posting here is from their website. I'm basically wondering if there is something we can put in that space I circled in the OP to do the same thing.

Add jb weld or whatever to the standard dust cover where it interacts with the lower, that little ramp. You'll get the desired increased angle for whatever reason you and FCD think it's a good thing to have.

FCD has the rationale that it will make the dust cover easier to close.

This is what we're fricking doing now? Optimizing the fricking dust cover opening angle to a perfect 125 degrees thanks to the fricking $50 Enhanced Port Cover?

What is the year that marks the cutoff for the last worthwhile thing 'invented' for the AR platform? I'm leaning towards 2008 or so.

          Anonymous

I mean, I'm not offended by optimization. I am offended by that optimization taking the form of a $50 dust cover lol

          Anonymous

let's just get the dust cover from counter-strike that shuts automatically. And rig the charging handle up to the forward assist so we can charge the gun by pulling on it, but still push forward on it.

          Anonymous

This is why I'm asking if there's a better way. Cause I'm trying to find ways to convince people not to just buy shit all the God damn time. I mean if I had access to a way to stamp the dust covers with a little nub to prevent them from opening the way that FCD does I'd just pump them out all day every day and sell them for $5 like any other dust cover. Hell I'd probably make a killing doing it do, "better" dust cover for 1/10th the price of FCD while retaining the aesthetics of a regular dust cover would probably get me free from work for like 6 months

just copy the strike industries cover and add some adhesive backed rubber strips at the bottom of the cover. has the amusing added effect of being silent when it opens.

the issues i see from there is possible binding and impossible to uninstal without fricking everything up. you could easily get it installed but out ehhh

I think a bushing might be a better answer, cause then you'd just insert the hinge through it along with everything else.

Can it not be accomplished by having the dust cover spring hold the cover closed instead of open and removing the detent?

          Anonymous

That would induce malfunctions for sure, unless the spring was REALLY weak, and even then I'm not sure it would work

            Anonymous

I'm almost willing to try this, if it doesn't work it's an easy enough fix

          Anonymous

would probably need something in the bolt to bump it open (or have something in the cover that the bolt can bump into) with spring then closing it, similar to how for example PKM does. Alternatively

            Anonymous

Anon, the AR15 bolt already bumps the dust cover open. Why do you think there's a detent in the middle of it?

NGL, if someone made a pin or clip for the dust cover that opens and closes it after every shot, and that pin/clip made the dust cover make a loud *ping* or *sprong* sound, I would get it in a heartbeat.

Hahahahaha right? Like I don't really care if you wanna spend some money to get a different dust cover from what you got... But no dust cover is doing $50 worth of improvement.
