I’m trying to make a rope swing in the woods, but any knot i tie just comes undone. The aim is a knot I can tie to the stick I’m using (picrel) that I can swing over a high branch and knot it from there. Also the rope in the pic is way too short, I bought a thinner one with more elasticity
Here comes the airplane: Clove hitch
Tried that and it didn’t work, rope doesn’t have enough friction to hold that type of knot together
A properly tied clove hitch tightens itself when tensioned. Do it right next time.
Like I said the rope does not produce enough friction to keep itself tightened when swung
>the rope in the pic is way too short, I bought a thinner one
We used to do that in the Rangers - if a rope was too short we looked for a thinner one.
>if a rope was too short we looked for a thinner one
digits of truth
I’m going out to the woods again tomorrow so I’ll be able to post more pictures of the rope, stick and branch I’m trying to get it to
Update: did it bros
That looks like a shitty stick that will rot in a season. Probably why the robe refused to collaborate tbh
>will rot in a season
maybe I plan to replace it yearly. and who the frick swings in a robe anyway
Round turn + buntline would work well.
Clove hitches are terrible for swings, they are specifically recommended *against* for certain tasks because of how easily they slip.
t. tested dozens of knots against each other to see which slipped or broke first
some results: palomar is the strongest fishing knot,
bowline knot sucks and breaks easily compared to almost anything else. double bowline is much better
reef knot sucks
carrick bend really sucks
zeppelin bend, ashley bend are both excellent
alpine butterfly loop is great
Yeah I found that if I swung it hard enough the clove hitch would just undo itself, so even if I got it over the branch it would’ve collapsed under the stress of me swinging on it
>the clove hitch would just undo itself
Using incorrect rope material. Many such cases.
google hammock knot.
