Gloves

I only wear gloves in the winter to keep my hands warm. I never wear gloves to protect my hands from cuts/abrasions or to keep them clean. Am I missing out? Should I start wearing gloves regularly?

Totally depends on what you're doing; if you are operating machinery they can be extremely dangerous so I avoid them if there's any chance of getting caught up in a spinning tool or pinch point.

If you are working with broken glass or sharp metal or spiny plants then there's no reason not to wear them.

If you are handling food, if your hands are dirty enough to make them worthwhile you just need to wash your hands better; in this sense they can provide a false sense of security. Where they do make sense in food handling is when working with things like chiles and other foods like green mangos that you might be sensitized to or will soak into your skin and create problems.

In that context it's more like any other chemical exposure where there's good reasons for wearing them, whether its working with acids and strong bases, or pesticides or handling toxic plants like poison ivy, or potentially pathogenic materials like blood and feces

Maybe. If you actuly take care of hand wounds you would be OK outside getting injuries again. Infections are easier to get as you age.

If you have to ask then you probably aren't doing hard enough labor for gloves anyway. Its pretty obvious to even the most braindead morons when gloves would be advantageous.

I do not wear gloves unless it's for cold protection. I need my dexterity for all work that I do, regardless if it is my earning job, or on my farm.

I do get quite a few splinters, but I remove most of them, others may hang around a while.

    callouses are my natural protection.

My daytime job involves sitting at a desk, typing on a computer.
So I'm not one of these tradesmen or manual laborers who does a lot of work with my hands, except what I do on my own on weekends, etc.

I wear gloves a lot when working in the yard, even if it's just cleaning up sticks or mowing the lawn. Then I don't worry about getting poked by a thorn or something. The lawn mower was giving me a blister so I have a dedicated pair of gloves I use just for that.
And when moving furniture or lifting boxes, I find that it seems like I can lift heavier things or get a better grip on awkward things when I'm wearing gloves. I don't know why. I guess it's because edges don't hurt my hands, so I can hold things more forcefully.

When working on my cars I might throw on a pair of nitrile gloves just to try to keep my hands clean, but when they tear or if I start to sweat, I'll usually give up.

they're very useful for some things, but there's nothing wrong with toughening your hands up and getting some callouses either. imagine not having callouses from your pullup bar

I like light work gloves for handling hot/sharp/dirty/greasy stuff, and for lifting heavy objects. Just buy a cheap pair, throw them on when it makes sense to wear gloves, see if you like it. moron.

No because I don't care about anyone who cannot figure out how gloves benefit manual workers such that they had to ask.

Don't wear boots either. Or pants. Or a loincloth.

Just depends on what you are doing. I if I’m using any liquids or pastes or putties I always use disposable rubber gloves. If I’m demolishing anything I wear work gloves. It’s all case by case.

Do not ever wear gloves and use power tools. It’s dangerous. The fabric can suck your hand into the blades.

most gloves are massive, weirdly large.
I would think a set of thick nitrate gloves are great thicker better increase friction slowing penetration pretty good heat transfer so you feel things difficult to snag on things damn near disintegrates after any damage and designed to be worn while operating power tools in surgical theaters.
btw surgeons multi multi-tools pretty great from what i have seen.

i wear these whenever i remember. i usually have 3-4 on rotation that i select based on how dirty the job is. they absorb glue a bit like skin and they're cheap enough that you don't need to take them off when you want to stick your finger in something gooey. they've also saved me many metal splinters
