pole beans work really well for any trellis-like structure such as the gabion cage itself. They provide a shitload of cover and also have the added benefit of producing shitloads of yummy green beans. plant enough of em, and they will provide beans for the whole year

Nothing. Taste is subjective. I think it looks like a big ugly wire crate full of rocks, but that's just my opinion.
You can make them from angle iron for a more permanent look. I think they can look pretty good especially when the iron is painted black.
