The only new NATO admissions that really put any real pressure on Russia was when Poland and the Balatics joined NATO in 1999 and 2004, and they've had more or less 20 years of NATO not nuking Moscow or initiating Barbarossa 2.0. The only NATO expansion since then has been tiny little countries in the Balkans that don't even border Russia. The idea that 2022 rolled around and *now* NATO was an existential threat that called for dramatic military action is nonsensical.

Ukraine in the EU would destroy his ability to coerce Europe and potentially other former Soviet states in the Russian sphere, what he's doing in Ukraine is no different than what he did in Georgia for example, seizing valuable land that allows a relatively small force to control resources needed by the entire region.
