Getting ready to install new shocks and springs and I note one of the three nuts that secures the top hat to the frame is frozen even after using break free. I have a new top hat and new nuts so I do not need to save them. It occurred to me that all I have to do is drill the side of the nut with a 1/4" or larger bit into the threads then hammer in a flat blade screw driver to split the nut ( I dont have a nut splitter). Any problems with this option?
Google “Nut Splitter”
There is a specific tool that does exactly what you want to do and they’re fairly cheap. You will have more control with one of those than a drill bit or chisel and less likely to wreck the threads.

OP is a fricking idiot. All he needs is a simple tool that goes by the name of "nut splitter". You can get cheap used ones from transgender clinics.
>Amazon
>Transgender clinic
>Harbor Freight
Basically the same
>Harbor Freight
Harbor Freight does not carry these. I called and spoke to the actual troony at the front. She looks hard and weathered, but I digressed. She/it/xer said they dont carry the nut splitter.
Gayyy.
I know Northern Tool sells them. Ask the trannies over there.

or you could just ask for the number of my exwife

ok, i'll contact the local troony clinc and order a nut splitter. Its always one more tool I need to buy, just one more. Since I don't care about the nut or threads because I have a new set, and I watched many videos about people struggling to remove these, and not one said to use a nut splitter, and I don't have one yet, I figured I would ask the troony experts here for advice. Thanks troonys.
If you don’t give a frick about the threads, cut it any way you want.
Also if you go full troony and decide to have a troony kid, Target now carries bathing suits to split nuts for children!
You don't need the nut or stud? Is there enough room to get a socket and extension on? The fast way to do shocks on rust belt cars used to be to put a deep socket and a long extension on and bend the stud back and forth until it breaks off. Takes no time at all.
>bend the stud back and forth until it breaks off
I will give that a try

I have a new top hat with new nuts, but there is limited room on top and the center portion where the shock sticks up through has a lip that causes the wrench or socket to be slightly at an angle stressing the top of the inner side of the nut. The other ones came loose easily but the last on is starting to round.
I just split those I can reach using a cutting disc on my angle grinder. Every mechanic should have one.
Heat it up with a torch, should break it free.
I just did these on my 30 year old land cruiser. Have you tried a torch and some leverage? Nut splitters work fine, but I'd wager that with some heat, some some grease, and some more heat you can break it free.
Been there, done that with the nut of my lower ball joint. But using a large drill by hand is not a good idea. I always carefully start with small drills like 1.5mm. I have them extend the chuck only a littel but, like 10mm, so they don't break off that easily. I drilled at 2 or 3 points, slowly working my way up to 3mm, so that the individual holes had nothing left between them. Then I ground an ejector pin into a flat chisel and split the nut.
If you have new shocks/top hat, just hit it with the angle grinder. Put new shocks in my crown vic and the nuts would just spin the shock, cutting blade on the angle grinder and I just chopped the whole nut off
