    There is no range

What you want is simmunitions, paint balls fired by powder charge basically

I'm imagining a bunch of morons running around in Kevlar onesies shooting each other with 10/22s and it's great.

I think someone was killed on a 4th of July about 1.4 miles away by someone shooting a .22 handgun in the air, I am having trouble tracking down the news article

Years ago IV8888 did a "how far will a .22 kill" video and they were demonstrating it penetrating wooden boards at over 600 yards.

i think my skull/ribs might stop a 22 at 600+, but I definitely don't trust it to not penetrate my throat or heart

Please do this like the moron who thought he could actually do the “shoot myself with smaller caliber bullets to increase resistance to larger ones” who fricking blasted his kneecap with a .22 short. Shit was hilarious.

The trick is to reload the ammo you intend to use. Reload .22 ratshot, replace the pellets with rock salt. Use eye protection, you should be fine.
If you feel adventurous, they already make rock salt loadings for 12 gauge shells, they're intended for riot control. Maybe invest in some face shields, but you should be good. Test on some meat or fruit first, but the worst that should happen is you get a little salt under your skin. The agony of salt in your wounds is part of the simulation.
