He makes a good point. Same with carrier groups. No air defense on earth can defend against say 5000 loitering munitions/suicide drones spread out over an hour

Good point. But I think there will be workarounds. dielectric mirrors can reflect up to 99.999% of the light with current technology. It works by layering dielectric material. I dont see why a low cost low alternative couldn't be developed for spray-on or wrap-on applications.

For the rotors? For the optics? For the censors? For the payload?
Lasers are very precise. Massed drone spam is a meme - platoon and company level drone assets are not. Unmanned logistics vehicles are not. Loyal wingmen are not. Reconnaissance deployable from any given IFV, tank or SPG are not. Drones make especially great assets for penetrating airspace because they are cheap, small, and don’t have a pilot that needs to survive. Deployed in small numbers it isn’t worth it to jam a broad front, deployed en masse and it absolutely is.
Though small suicidal drones might end up being used in USS Cole type attacks, and i think it’s only a few years until you see a civilian quad copter used in a terror attack in the west.

CWIS would eat any loitering drone for breakfast. Sure if you have 6 gorrilion it would eventually overwhelm it but until then a realistic amount would have alot of trouble getting through. And you still gotta launch them from somewhere carrier fleet of jets and cruise missiles would target the source of them and pound them too smithereens first.

All fair points. But I'm certain after the recent jamming of the JDAM-ER in youcrane we will see improvements on mini INS devices which are inherently unjammable.

              by flying there

              >what happens when I do a vertical dive over the target?
That would still require you to get past the CWIS first unless your drones can fly higher than about 16,000 feet.

There is almost nothing preventing an electric powered drone from reaching 30000 feet Even already existing commerical drones like the wingtra gen2 can reach 18000 feet

High powered microwaves. They’re already the favoured DE to develop by the USAF/USSF. It’s hard to be any degree of radiation resistant and flight capable, let alone small and battery powered, but you can’t be radiation proof. Not unless you want to be blind in every way possible. Never mind the need to communicate back home. And don’t say autonomis or I won’t be able to pretend this is a serious conversation
Obviously this kind of giga scale EM blanketing isn’t feasible - unless you need to stop a wave of a gorillion memedrones

Airburst tactical nukes. We already invented this for use against Soviet bomber swarms. A bunch of model airplanes would be nothing. Spreading them out? The laser weapons currently in development could likely beam them down before they could approach anything at a minute cost compared to the price of the drones. There's also the possibility they just get jammed to oblivion without firing a single shot. Imagine sending an EA-18G at the swarm and dropping them upon getting near them like if you casted fire cloak and walked into an army of skeevers.

That's cool chang. How would you like 500 ICBMs on the three gorges gam and a flood of spicey radioactive water washing way the bit of chanigistan that is not desert because the west is not Russia and gets shit done. You go ahead and start shit. Hoping for it. Or how about just for one year the USA an EU don't sell you food? Oh noess, little changbabys belly is all swollen with huger so sad. Maybe he can eat some belligerent communism. Whet's that, belligerent communism has no nutritional or intellectual value? Oh noe..........is that the time, time for changcannabalism as is tradition in changistan. Into the booth goes chang but don;t worrk you provide nutritional value to the PLA chang who will then be eaten in order of rank. You might even reach the glorious highs of having one of your own changchildren gobbled up with onions sauce shat out of Xis flappy arsehole.

I think flak is going to get smaller and less of a specialist vehicle and more of a bolt-on to existing vehicles.

Imagine a Bradly but at the back there's a small flak turret bolted on with its own search radar and it's looking for incoming objects in the 5cm-2m range travelling between 10km/h and 300km/h.
It wouldn't be any use against an RPG or ATGM but it could respond to drones, some mortar shells, nade drops, stuff like that.
The trick will be to stop it taking out flocks of geese but having it flag but ignore low speed objects until an operator overrides and says "kill" probably does the trick. You can afford to have it flag and alert an operator for slow stuff since it's you know, slow.

Drone IFF is going to need to be a thing and a2a drones might exist too.

Nah I think the Gepard will get a new version. Same sort of deal, AA guns and a radar (maybe with some SAMS) on an MBT body but modern equivalents of the systems. It has outdone itself in real combat against a real military.
