Folding rulers

Does anyone here use one instead of a tape measure? What are they useful for?

I’ve gotten in to using them more and more. If you need a straight line it’s easier with these. Pointing at stuff is better. If you need to extend a surface to roughly see where it hits a wall for example these are better. Start carrying one and you’ll see what you can use it for.

I use one all the time. Not as clumsy as tape for some measurements, can be use as an imprompto straightedge or bevel square, among other things. It also depends what kind you buy as some have different intentions but into their design.

I have quite a collection old ones. I have some four-folds ranging from a foot (w/ caliper), a few 2ft of different quality finish and a metal 3ft.
For 6ft/1m I have dozen or so of differing design considerations, and I have one 8ft with hook and extension.

The one he's using was made back they still cared somewhat about quality in the States. It has the plates on the side of the slats to keep the slats apart so they don't rub when opening/closing. Willing to bet the ends are all flush when closed.
I just bought a new Lufkin, I only had to go through dozens at stores before I could find one that was straight, had good hinges, and was accurate (and no the ends aren't flush). I was using a nos Craftsman with them as my work rule until I left it lying around and a co-worker got a hold of it snapping a hinge while dicking around with it.

Mine has a 6" brass slide-out extension for for exact internal measurements that are not multiples of 6". Very handy. Also handy for depth measurements.

The drawbacks of a folding ruler is it's shorter length than a tape measure. But more and more I am replacing the tape measure with a Bosch pocket leaser. I find the accuracy surprisingly good, often better than I can get with a tape measure.

Is the Craftsman lifetime warranty still offered?

If so, you might have been able to use that for a replacement.

I have one in my room.
I do a lot of designing but I can't for the life of me visualize about how big a certain amount of centimeters or inches is so I kinda just fold kt out sometimes as a help in visualizing objects.

On a side note, if one were to buy a fiberglass like the pic with an extension, clear coat the extension. They tend to be loose and the numbers rub away quickly.

    > Does anyone here use one instead of a tape measure?
Yeah, it's the go-to measurement tool around here.

    > What are they useful for?

    * Measuring horizontal lengths on stuff such as air conditioners suspended at heights beyond arm's reach (the joints snapping at 180 degree and 90 degree angles enables this).
    * Measuring elevation in combination with a rotary laser or leveling scope
    * Measuring depth (try using a measuring tape as tire wear gauge for instance)
    * Impromptu ruler for short distances
    * Opening bottle caps
    * Remotely manipulating shit you can't reach
    * Poor man's straight edge (due to the 180/90 degree snap I already mentioned)
    * Can be abused for levering in a pinch

Lots of uses. Every man should have one and carry it at all times. In recognition of that fact of life, work clothes usually have a long, slim pocket on the right leg for quick draw.

You mean the rule makes a loud pop when the wood splinters?

I use one everyday for measuring the instrument height, target and rod height; also I lay it on the ground in case I have to offset a location right or left due to obstructed line of sight.
Sometimes I use it to get internal measurements on the insides of catch basins, since I can kind of grind it into the sand and leaves at the bottom to get to the bottom.

I got one of these for free from some random event, I think it was from some defence company. I have no idea what the use case is supposed to be so I left it at work hoping someone would steal it
