First time rifle buyer here and I'm looking for suggestions on what to get. I don't hunt but I like going to the range to shoot. I have a few pistols and I've never felt the desire to get a rifle but my opinion has changed. I don't want to get an AR because every cringey moron has one and I don't want to fit in with them. You might think my reasoning is stupid but we all have our preferences. So what is a good entry level semi auto rifle choice that isn't an AR?

I was a no guns homosexual and also didnt want to be called tacticool so SKS was my first rifle as well i got one for 450 in 2020 and considered myself fortunate... I eventually got a tacticool MP5 clone but thats as far as I am going to go

a newer bulged Zastava or a Polish WBP AK if you want to be an AK gay. Romanian WASR if you're a poorgay who doesn't mind a 50% chance of getting canted sights. Do not buy a PSA-made AK.

PSA seems to always use cheap ass parts for their AKs. Their other guns seem fine but PSA AKs have seen some failures, likely due to cast parts. They've gotten a little better. The rule of thumb with AKs is to get an import which is probably coming from an old military arms manufacturer, the exception being WBP which is a commercial manufacturer but they make fantastic rifles with great parts.

I've heard nothing but great reviews about the PSA AKs. I heard they used to suck but are really good now.
just not worth trusting them honestly with the failures and short cuts they've made before, with them also seemingly always being in denial about their quality. The rifles at this point hardly cost less than imports that you can get that have better reputation and QC.

The high point carbine might fit the bill. If you aren't hunting and just plinking that and a 10/22 would be plenty of fun that's not an ar. Cheap and might use ammo from a pistol you have.

Is entry level a price barrier for you? If so then get a ruger mini 14 below $1k or an AUG If you have moar money.
Yeah, the Mini-14 is probably a better option than an AK—especially for a new rifleman—considering the vicissitudes of the AK market. A Mini can be set up with a light, sling, and red dot as easily as an AK, as well.

the colt a4 is another option but more money. around $1k. the only thing the colt has over the aero kit is brand recognition.

I was in your shoes OP, and I decided to get a WASR as my first rifle last year. I found out I needed to swap out the trash tier polymer furniture on it, file out the magwell over 6 hours to get any of my other mags other than the cheapo Palm mag it came with to fit, and the first time I took it to the range I could only fire it like 5 times because it was overgassed as frick and I could slowly feel my teeth rattling loose. Next gun I got was a Colt 6920 for around the same price, shoots fine any mag fits fine and swapping furniture is a breeze. Just saying, there is a reason why the AR is recommended so much as a first gun and I should've listened to /k/ bc my WASR is sitting in my closet collecting dust right now. Also ARs can be customized to your liking easily, it all depends on your willingness to spend and wait on certain parts.

The problem you're running into is that ARs can be decent quality and cheap. That's why they became popular. The non-AR entry level market is mostly garbage. I don't even own an AR, but the cheapest rifle I have that isn't a 22 was $1900 fifteen years ago. Either get more funds and get yourself something cooler than an AR, or do the mini-14 that someone else mentioned.
