Glock 19 if you have small hands, Glock 17 if you have big hands and just want to go shooting, Glock 45 as an allrounder.
Get 9x19 and go take some classes.
    Have fun!

centerfire has surplus postwar P38s in good shape. Cheap way to get a high quality and safe handgun built to a high standard and is also C&R eligible. I got some WW2 bakelite grips for mine.

How difficult/easy is the C&R process? I think I'll bite the bullet this year and do it. What am I in for?

Or is it too late as the age of cheap milsurp is kinda gone?

Not really worth it anymore and I'm pretty sure ATF started cracking down on personal use C&Rs. Or at least read an article about them 'planning to' years ago.

          Beretta 92/CZ 75/used SIG P226 of choice.

          >I'm pretty sure ATF started cracking down on personal use C&Rs
C&R is for personal use; it's the other kinds of FFL they don't like being used for that.

This anon might be right about the C&R license

but in my cucked state buying C&R handguns avoids the hassle and cost of training and licenses.

I don't recommend getting some boring ass polymer/striker fire slop, but honestly, you should just get whatever you think is cool. For your first handgun, the thing that matters most is how much you like the gun, because thats going to determine how much you actually want to go out and shoot the thing. So just look at the offerings from the all the big reputable manufacturers and pick something you think is cool.

Colt Series 70 if you aren't a low-T homosexual. CZ75 if you are.

If you want to get a budget gun first that's 22, get a second hand h&r revolver for like half the price. Will get you use to heavy trigger pulls from double action, and will be cheap to shoot. Then get the full sized pistol you want.

My first first was a P22, pretty good choice.
My first full size automatic was p99as, extremely good choice.
I got a glock, compared it to the p99as for 3 years then sold it. P99 is just better.

How do you like the P22? Thinking of picking up one since the only handgun I have is a CZ75.

I like it. There are a lot of good semi-auto 22s, though, I don't think you can really go wrong. SR22 is good, TX22 is good, P17 is good, ruger Mks are good.
Some people have ammo pickiness problems with their P22, I haven't experienced that. I didn't like the takedown on the p22, so I bought a captive spring for it. It comes threaded, but so do most of those. I've got a sparrow on the way for it. It looks funny with my banish 46.

P99 if you can find one, or a 92FS. Can't go wrong with a lot of options nowadays.

get what you think is cool for your first. if you want a practical recommendation, go to a range that lets you rent/shoot their guns if you buy ammo. feel out what works for your hands/body mechanics. i got lucky by the 5th or 6th gun, settling on a used hk vp9 (former popo?) with accessories for a good price

Don't get any plastic Sigs, avoid any and all Turkish-made or Brazilian made pistols.
My recommendations are as follows depending on what category you want:

    .357 Revolver:
    >Colt, S&W and Ruger are all good.
    Full Size Metal Duty Pistol:
    >Beretta 92FS and variants.
    >Sig P226
    >CZ75 and variants
    Full/Compact Polymer Duty Pistol:
    >Glock 17, 19, 45, or if you want something a little nicer to carry, Glock 48.
    >H&K USP9, USP40 or USP45. P30. HK45.
    Fun Single Actions:
    >Any nice 1911 (Dan Wesson's good semi-custom).
    >Ruger MK IV.
    >Colt SAA or good clones (Standard Manufacturing makes a nice one).
    Meme but great:
    >Dessert Eagle.
    >Mark 23.
