Firearm Guilty Confessions

I'll start.

I carry the cheapest ammunition I can find for personal defense because if FMJ's worked just fine in wars like the Battle of the Atlantic or in Operation Rolling Thunder, then FMJ's are good enough for me.

Why if they have the same point of impact? For a +/- 2% difference in perceived recoil? I'm doubt I could notice the difference between +p and bottom of the barrel 115gr fmj.
With rifles where the POI difference is more noticeable because you're shooting further okay I guess. Or keep a note card for m193 zero and whatever nice load you use zero side by side in the grip.

            Anonymous

Brainlet take. The 1" POI difference makes zero practical difference for any realistic self defense situation. Vette reliability with the good stuff, practice with the cheapest similar POI and recoil impulse ammo you can find, and shoot up your carry ammo as you cycle it out.

            [...]
Yes, hole through something vital makes things dead and in a military context where shooting trough objects can be important fmj makes sense. Good expansion or fragmentation makes for quicker results though and anyone who's hunted animals with both can attest.
If you want a cheap but good enough jhp the winchestor white box 147gr jhp you see at academy are adequate.

Bonded JHP frequently performs better post barrier then FMJ as the FMJ is unbonded and more likely to experience core jacket separation when going through things like sheet metal or auto glass

The losers in WWII were also using FMJ ammo. Everyone who lost a gunfight or failed to prevent an enemy soldier from causing damage because his bullets weren’t effective enough was also using FMJ. FMJ apparently wasn’t good enough for them.
Most of them probably would have preferred JHPs if they had the option.

I don't have the webm right now but I've seen a man take about 10 rounds to the chest of hollow points before collapsing, just continuing to run at the cop. At that point I told myself what the frick does the bullet tip matter. If someone has the webm please post it.

I’ll give you a fun fact: Without further information it’s impossible to draw any conclusion like “bullet type didn’t make any difference”. For all we know it would have taken 20 bullets with FMJs and then the officer would have been fricked. Maybe he was using the cheapest shitty JHP available and that contributed to the problem. Perhaps the cop was a bad shot and most of the bullets that you thought hit the chest either struck something nonvital or missed outright. This is quite common, see cases like James Gilkerson (34 rounds fired, 19 hits, only 2 vital hits) or Philip Trammell (8 rounds fired at less than across the room distance, 3 hits, 2 vital) or Platt during the Miami shootout (hit 12 times, 1 fatal with a craptastic JHP design). LEOs should not generally be presumed to be effective marksmen.

          >that means only shot placement matters!!!!
No, unless you’re consistently nailing someone’s brain. You need to both hit important things and do enough damage with those hits to induce incapacitation. You can shoot someone in the heart repeatedly with 2mm needles and it can still take a while to stop them.

Ballistics are important when you are shooting at a distance. Even shooting accurately at 500 yards and below requires practice and training. If you want to "hit people where it counts" you have to understand the ballistics of the round you are shooting. Even up close, you have to compensate for the bullet climbing.

Really, if you want to hunt ethically you have to be accurate. Making a clean kill with one shot and feeding people. Much more to guns than self-defense.

Muskets fired plain lead balls and they absolutely fricked people up, all this moron hand wringing over what type of modern bullet is 'best' is just because the tech is so good now there's little more to tall about. Same with your 9mm vs .45 threads constantly being posted.

When a target is moving, that alone fricks up anyone who relies on this sentiment alone
The reason why mag dumping has become so common is due to the calibers being used (9mm especially). While they will kill someone if 'hit where it counts', more often than not when a hostile is charging/moving your shots are going to strike non-vitals more often than not
Compared with calibers that bring more stopping power, you can trust them to incapacitate a hostile with a single shot even with less than ideal shot placement

Let me preface this by saying I'd been blueballed by a cute girl for 3 days in a row, been dosed with a psychedelic the night before without my knowledge, woken up from an erotic dream and was already on medication, so I NEEDED to frick so, so badly that when I saw some rule 34 of a very erotic looking, animate 20mm getting fricked, I was not in the right frame of mind. With that said, the fact I jerked off and came inside the loading port of my Mossberg 590 should be more understandable.

I’ve carried a Gen 1 S&W M&P 9 Shield for nearly a decade in a pocket holster in my front right pants pocket, even when I’m at home and wearing comfortable clothes like basketball shorts I carry it. You can’t even tell I have it and it’s so light & thin I could forget I even had it in my pocket. No excuse. That’s why I bought the M&P Shield when my state passed constitutional carry, I knew if I got the right gun even when I was having a lazy day I would carry cause I’d have no excuse. If I were you’d I’d still carry a fixed blade but I’d also get something you can pocket carry comfortably.

guess you’ve never had something as simple as a crackhead pull on your door handle? What are you gonna do, gut them? You shoot or use your fist at that point. If you use your fist the cops won’t even bother you once you’re finished. I think it’d be pretty hard to get a good ruling in court with a self defense stabbing.

I spend years in a high-risk job where I had to be heavily armed constantly. You get tired of it. Now, i have the luxury of avoiding bad people and places. Crims don't usually attack people who don't have anything valuable, and who can obviously beat them to death either. I have a higher chance now of being struck by lightning then being a victim of a violent crime. You can inject whatever hypotheticals you want, I lived it. Mass shooting? Im supposed to carry a gun everywhere for a statically irrelevant phenomenon? No.

          >Im supposed to carry a gun everywhere for a statically irrelevant phenomenon? No.

My personal opinion is I would feel like shit living my last moments thinking wow I should have had my gun on me, while the neighborhood pitbull gnaws my toes and fingers off. Or as the mass shooter walks on top of my body and moves to kill grandpa behind me. I don't want that to be my last thoughts. I realize it's statistically low, but you have to have the mindset of every off-duty cop in brazil. If you don't understand that reference then you don't belong on this forum.

          >You get tired of it. Now, i have the luxury of avoiding bad people and places.

You could at least carry a gun that is no more uncomfortable than a phone in your pocket. Do it for society. You are trained as you say, you could save another person from mortal danger. Yet you choose to be selfish.

Frickin this. I carry a gun for the same reason I carry a knife and keep a fire extinguisher in my car. Do I ever expect to use any of them? No, not necessarily, but I'd feel like the biggest fricking idiot in the world if I needed it, and decided that morning just to leave it at home because nothing will likely happen.
You don't tear out your airbags because getting in a wreck that needs one is statistically not going to happen, you don't remove your smoke detectors because statistically your house isn't going to burn down, so why would you not carry a gun just because statistically on the average day you aren't going to need it?

I wanted to see how long it took for a military buff to call me out on my bullshit and it's hilarious that it took so long. I was researching battles that took place on the ground in close quarter combat situations but when I found these air/sea assaults I thought it would be humorous to choose them instead.

I'd be okay with strict gun licensing if it gave license holders free reign to own pretty much whatever they want, if it was a shall-issue license, and maintained its constitutionally-protected status
    >$20 per year for a license, fee waived for poorgays. Must renew annually
    >background check to look for criminal records and to look for involuntary commitments to psych wards
    >must have a primary care physician, does not require medical clearance
    >can freely transfer firearms between license holders with no delay
    >more severe penalties for using guns in crime, mandatory minimum sentencing
    >open NICS to the public
    >tax credits for people who pursue firearms training to help other license holders
    >NFA repealed
    >worth mentioning again, license is Shall-Issue

i disagree with this part because it implies you're a dumb man that cant even afford $20. although it's not even about $20, it's about maintaining your responsibility of gun ownership. also I would abolish FFL transfer fees but I don't necessarily like the idea of guns being shipped through the mail because Black's rob mail trucks often and that will just create more bloodshed in the streets.

There are smart ways to do gun control, but yeah we'd need some major incentive to even pretend to try. NFA repealed, no ammo sales tax or some shit.

Hello sir, it says here you served in 'nam? Whats that, you got nightmares, violent outbursts? Well that's alright, thats not a mental illness. Wait, you're dreaming about the sexy man in the bunk next to yours? This here DSM-5 says you're cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Sorry sonny, guess you don't get a gun loicense.

If being a homosexual was more of an indication of mental illness than having actual PTSD from being in a war, what makes you think that tomorrows medical institutions won't make shit up as they go?

We already have this issue today where the FAA will revoke a pilot's license if he had 15 minutes of therapy 10 years ago. So the gun control exploitation aside this would basically mean everyone who legitimately needs mental help won't seek it for fear of losing his property.

        Anonymous

I considered that exact point and I have two suggestions that would help protect gun owners and appease enough gun grabbers:
        1. My idea doesn't require a mental health screening, just access to healthcare. You'd provide some sort of documentation that shows you are a patient with your local primary care facility. Post ACA (Obamacare) every American has access to health insurance. It's certainly not perfect but with some tweaking it could be a better way to guarantee the availability of affordable healthcare for everyone. Please play careful attention to the words I'm using here as well.
        2. I didn't mention this in my original post (its tangentially related), something needs to change for patients' privacy rights when it comes to firearms. You are completely right about people hesitating to seek mental health while owning guns for fear of losing theirs. I believe that is unacceptable and discourages seeking help when they need it the most.

CCW and handguns are far, far far more important and I'd gladly trade muh salt rifles for 50 state permitless purchase and carry

I don't actually own any guns but I constantly call people out as nogunz and have an arsenal of pics saved to stand in as my arsenal.

Although I have learned about guns over the years, I still mostly rate them based on how good they were in Call of Duty or Battlefield.

When discussing combat or military ops, I often claim that I have significant first hand experience on these matters and in turn use that to support my position.

I also think submachine guns, shot guns, and DMRs almost always look cooler than assault rifles and are thus cooler.

I think 5.7x28 is a stupid fricking round and the M&P 5.7 is a stupid fricking gun.

Regardless I just bought the gun for $649 (after tax) and eight 22 rnd magazines for about $30 each.

I did this because I've seen enough shit for past couple of years to prioritize capacity above all else, and the gun shoots ok.

It's weird because I was just looking up videos of this gun all night last night. I'm very fascinated by it and considering getting it as a car gun and home defense gun. i'm surprised everyone is hyping up the 5.7 round again. apparently its ammo price is going down as well. I hope hickok45 reviews it.

When you say you've "seen enough shit", are you talking about the fact that there's never been a single recorded case of a private citizen being killed or injured due to running out of ammo in a defensive shooting? There's even the ultimate example of Rittenhouse, who was attacked by a mob, only firing 8 rounds total. Idk, maybe you've seen something in the past couple of years to contradict these facts.

        >There's even the ultimate example of Rittenhouse, who was attacked by a mob, only firing 8 rounds total.

That's some sort of spin you're spouting there. They were actually trying to disarm him because they thought he was a threat and didn't think he had access to that weapon. Why wouldn't you call kyle rittenhouse a mob participant himself? They don't know what the fricks going on. He didn't know what he was doing. He wasn't even part of a security team. He wasn't a cop. I support gun laws and stuff but that rittenhouse fellow was a huge moron. Do you remember when he was crying at the verdict? It's because he knew he fricked up and knew he could have been found guilty for the shit he did.

Personal preference. FMJ can cause over penetration which can be a bad thing in a self defense situation. Combat is a different situation. But in the end a well placed shot is what's important. I personally wouldn't carry the cheapest ammo I could find because QC is a real thing and a failure to fire could be life and death.

This is just the objective truth. After breaking in my gun with 500 rounds of 124g/147g I'm going full cheap and getting boxes of 115 gr. Unless the ammo instantly kills the target, it is always better to have more ammo then to have muh piercing for a 9mm ammunition

I’m almost 23 and I still don’t know how to zero an optic correctly. Every time I’ve mounted one, it seems to be at an angle. Every time I’ve tried to zero one, I get about 3 inches away from zero, and whatever I try next just fricks it up even more, or the POI doesn’t change. I could rotate windage 180* and the POI won’t change, and then some other time I move it a c**t hair and it moves 5 inches. I’m being completely serious when I say I have no fricking clue how to do it. Seen hundreds of tutorials, even had people try to show me in person, I just can’t get it figured out. Everyone tells me a completely different method that contradicts the previous method I see, and I never know which one is right. It’s such a simple task, but I just can’t do it. From shitty air rifles scopes when I was 14 to red dots on my AR, I just can’t figure it out. It’s humiliating, what am I not getting? Am I cursed to walk this barren earth with unzeroed optics until the end of time? Am I just moronic? This problem haunts me.

you literally just leave the bolt open for a second after firing. cold bore means a literal cold bore, as in cold. the bore expands as it heats, which affects your zero at distance. its enough to screw you over while sighting in

Was a euro nogun some years ago. Now hasgun at 35+yo, they are becoming more and more of an obsession. I browse gun stuff everytime I can, instead of doing useful things, considering I have a family to take care of and a career change to go through. I sometimes spend more time with guns (cleaning and larping and restoring an old gat and all) than with my three children. As a euro, guns are very expensive, I can't let myself go on a irresponsible way. I'm more armed than 99% of my countrymen with very few guns regarding US standards, but still consider my "battle gear" is far from being complete. It is tho, obviously. Problem being : what reasonnable family civilian father cares about "battle gear" ? It's complete larp and I can't get it out my head. A basic cheap italian or american pump 12 gauge is everything i'll ever need for security purpose, I know it, but still building an "all bases covered" setup that is costing me a frickton of money (that I don't really have, or which would be of better used elsewhere because life and all). I feel weird and displaced but still i'm freaking happy with my stuff, it seems to be a pretty based and patrician hobby to me. I don't know where it goes.
