Probably not since the former, with the public blessing from Putin, is trying to absorb Wagner into MoD, while the latter is one step away from an armed rebellion.

I think this would work if Russians were being EXTREMELY moronic and left nothing but a fraction of a garrison force expecting absolutely zero chance of attack from that front.
But this would imply that Ukraine has insane logistics in that area. If they don't, it's one hell of a gamble.

What do you mean? it's still going to be one hell of a swamp/mud and it makes moving heavy equipment hard, but not utterly impossible.

            Anonymous

at this point even if the river bed is completely dry it would be at maximum ~10cm, beneath it would still be soft silt. you won't cross this with any vehicle except a hovercraft.

I don't believe it's true, but the area near the dam will be pretty much the only area that won't be a muddy mess.

            >it's still going to be one hell of a swamp/mud

          Anonymous

The common ancestor came from Eastern Europe, spreading outwards in several directions.
Not that this matters - modern day inhabitants of Northern India have had thousands of years of divergence from the original stock - and not even Alexander's empire or the prolonged Mughal rule have had much of an imprint. They don't even look like the Persians who live geographically close, let alone Western Europeans.

I assume India is there because China/India hate each other. Nigeria is there probably for le diversity.

Nigeria is there because they have been working closely with the UK and France to fight islamists, pirates and warlords. India has had less cooperation with various NATO countries than even China, so their presence is perplexing.

i don't think russians are that quick to react to this. they'll most likely either stay at their fortifications with some of them fleeing and getting capped by kadyrovite kings. if there's anything serious at khahovka, russia will react way too late, they'll start pointing fingers and measuring eggs while the ukrainians try to divert them as best as possible

Even assuming Russian defenses in the area are paper thin, you'd still need a supply line to the city to hold it, or you'd get kicked out by a counterattacking enemy that has a much easier time pouring in troops and supplies.

Yeah, I'm terrified that Russia has done it. Russia before the mass mobilization was using a mere 200,000 professional soldiers, plus whatever Wagner and the Donetsk militias contributed. 300,000 men and lord knows whatever equipment and mines just adds SO MUCH FRICKING BULLSHIT they need to fight. I think Ukraine might have been overconfident.

Plus Russians are adapting, and using smarter defensive strategies.

My biggest fear was that Russia would freeze the conflict and this very well might be exactly what happens.

That might not be such a good idea if Ukraine continues to get free cruise missiles and jets to launch them. Keeping half a million men sitting in trenches to watch cruise missiles fly overhead and knock out anything of sufficient value in the occupied land is extremely expensive with no return.

The reason kharkiv and Kherson collapsed was because they just didn't have enough to man the defenses since Russia was still operating on a cheapo army where they were cutting corners. In the event of an actual war the 200,000+ professional army was meant to be augmented by hundreds of thousands of conscripts. So the "proper" Russian army didn't arrive until after the first 300,000 wave of mobilization. Ukraine killing over 200,000 Russian allied soldiers sounds impressive when they have at least 300,000 behind that and hundreds of thousands more coming.

The counter-offensive is slow going and my fear is that Ukraine will just run out of armored units and enough soldiers before making serious proress. Then it's a frozen conflict forever.

If Ukraine's keep trading like they are, Russia will run out of men again. Putin let slip that they have already lost ~60 tanks in the offensive.

              >Russia will run out of men again.

Ukraine cannot win a war of attrition since Russians have just so many god damn people compared to Ukraine. They need to win a war of breaking through defenses and encircling the enemy forcing them to withdraw.

At best we're seeing 1:1 trading which is terrible. Russia does not care about losing another 100,000 mobiks, but Ukraine doesn't have that kind of numbers.

I'm hoping I'm wrong and they make slow steady gains and break through to Meriopol in a few weeks or months.

And yes, there's promises to replace all the bradleys. but there's a difference between a Bradley sitting in Utah and one in Ukraine. They might not be able to get them there fast enough.

I never said they would run out of men. I said they would break the line because they are killing them above replacement levels over the short term.

And that's not why Kherson collapsed. They had their best units there before the offensive because it was so heavily telegraphed. They knew it was coming and could not stop it.

              Anonymous

They had their best units there but that wasn't the issue. They didn't have ENOUGH of them. The Russian army before mobilization and after are totally different beasts. They're literally just shrugging off 100,000 deaths like it's no big deal because they have hundreds of thousands more. They're completley willing to utterly frick their country's future demographics over for this because Putin is betting the big game.

I AM spelling doom because I'm terrified and hope I'm wrong. There's hints and rumors of Russia planning to withdraw from much of Zap because they can't hold it and might go scorched earth. Just level infrastructure before going. Break all the dams, and power stations, and anything worth anything. I'm terrified for the ZNPP in that case. One would HOPE it's off limits but Russians are fools.

They literally have hundreds of thousands of more soldiers now and it really makes all the difference. And grinding Wagner to dust in Bakhmut is a sacrifice they were glad to make especially since they don't count as official casualties.

Russians are actually playing a good defensive war, or at least as best as they could. Before Russian lines were being broken and then panic ensued. Here they're staying more coherent, using heavy amount of mines, and trapping heavy armor into areas where they get bogged down and hit by artillery. It's preventing fast movement of armor which is what they WANT to do.

Russia had numerical superiority in both Kherson and Kharkiv. They continue to enjoy numerical superiority both overall and locally to this day.
For Russian forces to be outnumbered, they would need to loose over 300k frontline troops.

They could only handle it for about 10 years in Afghanistan, and that was a cheaper occupation plus the Soviet Union was a lot bigger than just Russia.

Anon, Putin himself came out and announced that they don't have enough equipment to arm the army they currently have. And if Der Große Monke said this publicly on Russian State TV, then things have clearly gotten desperate for them.

So this is it. Soldiers don't turn up at the recruiting station with their own rifles and vehicles, although that might a requirement soon. You can't fight a modern, mechanised force in nothing but tracksuits and flatcaps and win, regardless of how many mobiks you throw at the problem.

Oh their demographics are so fuuuuuuuuuucked (but so is Ukraine's). Like 50% at least of the people who have fled both countries are never coming back. And those who fled Russia are young couples who have given up on the system, or young men fleeing conscription - the young people who are just utterly VITAL for their countries demographics. Where the frick are they getting soldiers in the future?

Best case scenario is they freeze Ukraine, but then what? 200,000+ force in perpetuity in Ukraine manning defenses? That's a huge cost in and of itself. How are they going to defend their own borders and internal conflicts?

Someone in dumbfrickistanshi is going to realize the army is nowhere to be found and will declare themselves an indenepdnet Republic and beg USA or China to fund them. Oh and this republic will just happen to sit on a pile of fricking Uranium, oil, gas, rare earth minerals, etc.

              >200,000+ force in perpetuity in Ukraine manning defenses?

                Anonymous

To be fair, iirc Kharkiv happened because most of the troops were stationed in Kherson and Donbas, which is why Ukraine was able to cut through Kharkiv quick and easy. That's also why Russia started drafting people so that they don't have big gaps in their defenses anymore. And in Kherson and now in Zap it's taking Ukraine long and methodical operations to starve the enemy out by striking the supply lines to force them out. And it's gonna get harder the more land they reclaim, because that would mean more consolidation of troops in the occupied territory.

                Anonymous

It's probably not impossible if they can just dig in there in perpetuity and Ukraine isn't getting any more artie shells to continuously turn them into crispy bacon. If we're talking Russia forced back into Donbas, including occupied territory, and Crimea then yeah. Trying to force them out is gonna be a meat grinder.
