Need to fence about 2 acres without blowing 50k on materials - think post and wire is about the only reasonable solution to keep dogs in & deer/coyote out.
Planning to buy an auger attachment for tractor for the post holes, but how much space can i get away with between posts? In new england so i'll be fighting sloped/rocky terrain.
I have a welded wire fence around my garden. The wire between 8f posts is sagging a little the stuff between 6f posts are holding up much better. It's been fiveish years.
How the hell do you spend 50k on 2 acres? you've got what, 400m of fence?
>400m of fence
gtfo with your commie measurement system.
fences are measured in rods.
1 rod = 16 ft.
the speed of light is not involved anywhere in the equation.
fine, ~1250 foot
how do you spend about 40/foot?
what the hell are you trying to build?
>40/foot
You mean 78 and 1/8 rod.
How can you expect to participate in this discussion when you keep spouting unrelated gibberish?
holy frick, why do you morons have to make everything have trillion different measurements while you could just say
>400m fence and post every so and so meters
but noo here rods here rods there feets here flysdicks there
>don't be brown
>can remember different units of measurement and apply them contextually
The reason you use rods for fences is that you place posts at 1/2- or 1-rod spacing, 1 1/2 if it's just barbed-wire strands or high-tension
well a fricking 8-ft castle wall would be ideal but i ain't got that kind of scratch. a standard privacy fence would also be an unrealistic given the cost of wood... you follow?
did you do any kind of supports between posts?
>supports between posts
One. But I think I'm going to add a top bar to the 8 ft sections this year to hang plants on.
Go with the composite fiber posts if you can get them, they are about twice the price but will last forever. Otherwise expect to be replacing fence posts in about 5-10 years, if seems like ages away but you'll be out there replacing them before you know it.
All in expect to pay about 1 to 2k for everything depending on your area
How do those things hold up nowadays we have to replace a sizable span each year here.
I looked into steel posts, one issue I saw with some composites was the springiness and less strength but that was a while back I imagine things have moved on.
>think post and wire is about the only reasonable solution to keep . . . deer out
Deer can jump over a 7 foot fence easily.
They misjudge a lot too and get stuck and die. That attracts other animals that come eat them. I saw a dead deer stuck on a 5 foot wire fence once rotted all to hell.
If you have a second offset wire it can do more to deter deer than one tall fence
Do you have a chance to use natural/ingrowing fence posts? I only ever fenced in the tropics where thats the norm. But everything grows like weeds there, so it's a bit unfair.
If you’re getting the tractor supply auger make sure you double check the pto slip connector. They’re the ball bearing kind and are pieces of shit.
You didn't even try to price out a fence, did you? Fencing a full 2 acres costs around $2000 in materials, and these posts don't even require an auger, just hammer them in. Admittedly this is only a 4ft high fence, but should deter the fatter coyotes and deer.
>Pic related, assuming you're at around 1200ft of fencing.
I have to re-do all our fences soon, using old drill rods with a star-picket in-between each rod. About 1500x1500ft (500x500m) of length, not including all the internal fencing. Each rod is about 3m long. Going to cut each rod in half, insert one third into the ground and quikcrete it in.
Going to take a while.
How thick are these rods? What's your climate like?
Aussie, temperate. Mediterranean climate, cold winters and hot summers.
Rods are standard 90mm and 120mm, about 5mm thick radius and hollow.
Let me see if I understand you.
You have two types of pipe; one is 90mm diameter from outer edge to outer edge the other is 120mm diameter both with a 5mm wall thickness?
Yep, bang on. They're standard sizes for drill rods.
>dogs in & deer/coyote out.
Anon, it won't do either of these things.
Deer will jump over and yotes will dig under.
Your dog will use the yote dugout to get out too.
>t. countrygay with a fence like your pic
My advice is to train your dogs to stay in the limit and do a 8' deer fence around plants and 1' bellow ground fence around your animals for yotes.
You won't spend nearly that much. 8' long treated posts (logs, not dimensional) and some kind of welded fabric. I did it on 1.7 acres and it's not bad. I used 4"X4" goat fabric and it keeps in all my animals from dogs to horses.
Approx $5 - $7 per post and $350.00 or so for 300' of the fabric. You can do the hole hard for probably $2000.00 - $2500.00 including gate hardware. Just don't forget the Advil, drilling the holes with an auger and placing the posts is back breaking labor.
Good thread, actually helpful.
Not OP - My quote for 2 acre fence install was $60k - I think contractors didn't want the work, they are busy so gave crazy price for a metal wire fence 8 feet high around 2 acres square.
Just had a bear get another two hens this morning, so really need to fence the whole lot myself if I can keep materials under $4k.
