Why are they designing it like this? It's almost like they want drone grenades to get stuck on the roof and project the blast straight down into the crew compartment.

I think its NERA modules (these are very simple, 1 sheet of rubber sandwiched bettwen 2 sheets of thin steel). But NERA required to be angled relatively to attack thus angled set up.
These would stop small shaped charges (lie 40mm grenades or DPCIM bomblets) that are dropped by drones.

Why don't they put a bunch of actual tank armor on top of the tank instead of sheet metal or something like just enough for a javelin to destroy but not effect the tank itself

How is Russian tank production going anyhow? Are their losses still unsustainable?

      Anonymous

      Yes.
But eventually they'll have so little it'll be hard for Ukriane to find them so they'll actually increase on numbers eventually.
In OPs image they appear to be trying to add thermal armour so they can operate for longer during the thermal barrier crossing between the night and day, the standoff armour is to protect from drone dropped stuff.

Your pic clearly shows old Soviet T-72Bs being refurbished to the B3 standard.
Russia has not produced a cast turret since the last turret casting plant (in Azovstal, yep, in Mariupol closed down in the early 90s).

T-90Ms are probably all new production, and they use welded turrets.

Russian MIC has experienced a massive loss of institutional knowledge in the past 20 years as anybody with IQ over 90 has fled or been sent to gulag.

All these photoshoots also show factory floors with signs of long-term idling. Westerners like to speculate that this is because of "sanctions", but considering the volume of smuggling going in from Europe and China, the most likely cause is lack of workers - even last year, Putinists were berating factory workers for striking due to missing/delayed wages.

Most current Russian tank "production" is cannibalization of reserves or inoperable units. This is why Russia has been forced to use "naked" T-62s and T-54/55s in front-line combat. Those same hulls pull double duty as artillery pieces now, because they've shot out or lost too many SPGs they cannot replace at an appreciable rate. It's unfortunate for the Putin junta, but they shot their wad trying to make "3 days to Kyiv" a reality and now are steadily losing entrenched territory instead. It's gonna be a grind, though. Even Russians can mass manufacture mines.

          >but enough about the abrams
Abrams requires no new production, and has not for some years. You might have a point if the US was forced to rotate M-60s and M-48s to its frontline units, though.

          >u/k/ikes have Crimea back, and their taking Russian land?
Per your dictator's decree, the land Ukraine has liberated is Russian. Including Kherson, which I was told would be Russian forever. But less sarcastically, Ukraine has no desire for Russian land, merely to expel Russian invaders.

          >Russia got invaded and lost land?
Yes, in Belgorod oblast. Oddly the Chechens you've deployed there keep hiding from combat and the regular army troops are (according to the locals) just looting rather than fighting most of the time.

          >ukraine grew in size as a country?
Ukraine has no desire to grow in size, merely reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Despite Russia's attempts to annex them, they're well on their way.

Guess the wedge shapes may be to make the shaped charge grenades detonate pointing away from the roof or something? It's much smaller than the improvised ones though, frick knows why since the size of the cope cage was what really helped when dealing with suicide drones etc.

How much penetration does a top attack missile have? Would not mounting a cage with "GREATEST ERA OF WORLDS STOPS NATO APFSDS" add extra armor up and slow down the penetrator enough to prevent instant cosmonaut promotion?

your whatabout is flawed for two obvious reasons: one, obviously you can see that. just image search for it. two, russia had better slat and mesh armor designs (cargo cult imitation of nato implementations) 5-7 years ago than they're installing today.

what makes this thread's topic notable, for the non-1pbtid non-streetshitter anons following along:

at the outset of the 2022 invasion, cope cage designs were not professionally designed or fabricated – various military units just welded shit up and hoped for the best, with a wide variety of cages as a result.

whereas now we're seeing a factory-direct cage at omsktransmash, and that cage STILL seems to completely ignore what the russian MIC already knows about how to make half-decent slat armor.

      https://i.imgur.com/8sDkQd1.jpg

Unironically cope cages would have saved this Leo from an FPV.

that leo is not destroyed. you're also looking at damage directly above where a crew member sits. a cage could easily have complicated exiting the vehicle.
