Romania finally retired its Mig-21 fleet last month. The airframes are completely shagged out and unfit for purpose so I wish they'd been converted into giant kamikaze drone bombs.

        >giant kamikaze drone bombs.

        ie a missile.

Is that actually worth it with cost vs just buying a functional missile? I imagine a MiG-21 isn't going to be much of a stealth missile and will just announce itself on radar. So would it be effective? Is it worth it just to waste Rusisan air defenses?

          Anonymous

MiG-21 can do a Supersonic dash through air defenses though, and carry a lot of payload, like 1000kg warhead easy.

Also the large size gives it a very long range compared to small missiles.
MiG-21 ferry range with drop tanks is 1800km.
At low altitude it might be more around 1000 km, but that's still stupidly far compared to other weapons Ukraine might have.

Here's an idea, why not give MiG-21 drone a Dumbo payload, like 2000kg, and have a saturation attack of 20 or so attack the Kerch bridge.
As they get close to the target they could switch to visual guidance onto the bridge pillars.

turning them into drones is easier said than done. the US has been working on drone F-16's for more than a decade.

There's a world of difference between turning them into reusable, highly refined, unmanned strike aircraft and turning them into slapdash cruise missiles.

I suspect they would just get shot down. As laughable as Russian AD is, they should have no trouble shooting down a Mig-21.

Those are already drones. The one that crashed in Croatia was likely being used as intended, launched by Russia to do recon over Ukraine, then continued flying in a straight line over Romania, Hungary, and Croatia until it crashed. They aren't exactly advanced. The ones that the Ukrainians converted into missiles successfully damaged or destroyed multiple Russian strategic bombers and fighter aircraft.

The Croatia one apparently had explosives or something inside it.
Although our dumbass government isn't confirming or denying it did actually carry any since our dipshit president has beef with our defence minister.

The official investigation report claims that there were fragments of an OFAB-100-120 100kg bomb found, but no traces of explosives. The Secretary General of NATO claimed that it was unarmed. Everything else seems to be using deliberately vague language. Another of the drones had crashed in Ukraine a few days prior. It seems likely to me that the Russians were using them for their intended role, but they very well could've been using them to supplement their missile strikes considering they were using S-300s in ground attack mode. Maybe that's what gave the Ukrainians the idea to do the same, the timeline would line up.

To me it is probably one of these scenarios:
1)drone is Ukrainian, but sent by accident
2)drone is russkie, also sent by accident
3)drone is Ukrainian, sent as false flag(whatare the chances of it crashing in the middle.of a fricking NATO capital)
4)drone is sent by Russia to test NATO response(the capital thing again)
Also, one of the pieces landed on Jarun lake, and Ukraine has a place called Yarun so it's possible some vodka addled uke/Russian. Google mapped the wrong place and inputted the wrong coords

                1) is unlikely, because the damn things can't turn for shit - it would literally have required the Ukies to launch it in the wrong fricking direction.
                2) is consistent with observed Russian competence
                3) is ridiculously unlikely, especially early in the war when Ukraine needed to be on its best behavior to get any sort of Western aid
                4) is unlikely because of the extreme risk of direct NATO involvement

this was during the beginning of the war when Russia was still full-tilt into false flag propaganda for justification in an attempt to stifle Western support for Ukraine before they got bogged down, so i'd add this possibility:
                5) the Russians used a system they kept in stock but only Ukraine officially uses to violate NATO airspace - crucially, this was before they'd lost any chance at reaching Odessa, so they may have intended to dampen Western support directly to Odessa by violating the airspace of the countries that said aid would likely go through if they managed to cripple Ukraine's internal transport infrastructure

of course there's also the wildcard:
                6) it was Trans-sisteria

Azerbaijan bought bought drone tech from China which converted old Soviet AN-2 biplanes into decoys so TB-2s can target Armenian anti-air assets.
          Worked pretty good.
Ukraine converted old Soviet era drones into missiles so it would be neat to see the same done for MiGs as a decoy or an entire weapon.

If you're thinking of morons like Afghanistan, or Iraq, those were failed colonial experiments and those states would never last. Tunisia is like Ukraine in that they threw off shackles and embraced democracy but then their economic weakness led to it to slide back. I really think Tunisia has some real chance.

The difference is that nations have to embrace change themselves and WANT IT. Afghans literally don't understand anything, and are perfectly fine being savages in little villages.

Maybe if Russia followed through on even one threat I'd give a shit.
I'm all for political realism as a philosophy but the implication of that school of thought is that either a) Russia is a great power that can enforce a sphere of influence, or b) it isn't and it can't- so it shouldn't try.
There's no option c where everyone is supposed to pretend that they're a power that should be respected, especially if it's come to the clown world scenario that donating obsolete RAAF stock is the new red line that is going to irreparably damage Russias strategic position (and I say this as an Australian patriot).

I mean, yeah, "only" f-16 was hyped because they wanted a single multirole frame, not a zoo. But before that they had to decide which model to hype up specifically, they were choosing more or less between the f-15, f-16 and f/a-18, where they chose f-16 because it was the cheapest and there was more people who could give it to them, but I heard ukies who claimed that their personal favorite choice would be a f/a-18 otherwise.

Marin only talked about the possibility of sending the F-18s to Ukraine after the F-35 Lightnings are in use in FAF. It turned into a PR -stunt because the Finnish press invented headlines about Sanna promising and already sending the planes this year. And then it snowballed with the usual normie brainfarts about the situation.

Personally, I'd love to send our Hornets to Ukraine, if there only was the logistics to operate them in there.

          >"Noooo, it's the media misrepresenting me, I swear!"
She just wanted those sweet, sweet, political points just before elections. Instead people took her words seriously and adults in the Finnish government had to explain to US and Ukraine that nobody in here knows wtf she is even talking about.

So you agree, people didn't listen to what she was saying: Finland could discuss that option.

And then people started making shit up about what she had "promised" etc. A proper shit show.

Did you read the screen cap? Ukraine started a formal process and US got roped into this shit because that stupid b***h didn't understand in what context she was giving those kind of irresponsible statements (giving out jets to Ukraine). She was either downright dumb or just giving out that kind of statement on purpose to gain favor just before the elections. Probably both scenarios are true, tbh, but sure, "Sanna dindu nuffin", again, if that floats your boat.

That doesn't make any sense. The F/A-18 was always a niche fighter, unlike the F-16, and the hardware ecosystem is pretty much dead at this point. The Marines had to source spare parts from the Yorktown museum... The F-16 is still in production, is constantly upgraded and has many NATO users near Ukraine. And how many flight hours do the AUS Hornets have left?

      >Niche fighter
      >Nearly 800 built
I know the US doesn't them any more in favor of the Super Hornet (I think the Marines retired their Hornets?) but I'd hardly call the primary American carrier fighter for 2 decades a niche aircraft.

        Anonymous

It's a niche fighter because of its role as a naval fighter and in terms of production numbers and number of users, compared to the F-16.

      >The F/A-18 was always a niche fighter, unlike the F-16
Not really, a fair number of countries use them from land bases, it just has a bit of extra weight due to carrier modifications. It's very capable, definitely more so than F-16 Block 50/52.

      >And how many flight hours do the AUS Hornets have left?
We bought/built -A models and then upgraded them to basically ersatz -C model status part way through their service. When we did that, part of the "HUG" (Hornet UpGrade) program was building new centre-barrels which were the most time-expired part of the aircraft - some of them are fricked out and only good for cannabilising but lots of them have a lot of airframe hours left. Some pundits have suggested that like Finland has planned to operate Hornets from highway bases and rough fields, the Ukies could do similar with the Hornet because of its carrier origins and tough landing gear.

It has superior performance to the F-16 in the conditions Ukraine is expecting to face, so it's absolutely better to send them off then something that is at best on-par with the Russian's workhorse craft and potentially outmatched by their white elephants.
Perhaps the F-18s could even screen the F-16s in operations.

regardless of which aircraft they end up getting, the key to the arrangement actually working, in my opinion, is allowing western contractors to maintain them in Ukraine. Maybe even western governments making the arrangements themselves. Reasonable turnabout when in the past actual Soviet pilots and radar/SAM operators killed Americans in proxy conflicts

F/A-18 always seemed like the third option in discussions that didn't get much screen time. Alongside F-16 and Grippen it has:
    >comparable performance to Grippen
    >Maintenance requirements of F-16
    >Availability somewhere in the middle
Being a carrier fighter it should be able to operate on less than ideal runways (i,e, highways) with a good payload, good range but this was built witht the backing of the USN in mind so maintenance is more intensive than grippen which needs one officer and a squad of conscripts. Many countries operate it and want to replace it with F-35 but not as many nations as F-16 reducing available sources. Overall the thing that might prevent it could ultimately be its cost prohibitive but clearly not. Can't wait to see Hornets buzzing and stinging vatBlack folk

Aside from the airframes being beaten to shit F-18 seems like a better option than F-16. More agressive-with-giving countries (Finland, Canada, Australia) still able to dip into US parts stocks ("parts" might include whole airframes behind the scenes), in Finland presumably they can find trainers who speak Russian, and crucially they can operate from/land on very short and improvised strips including arrested unlike the F-16.

No, anon. First they sold Canada a small number because they had more airframe hours than the RCAF ones did. Then out of the remainder, a deal was struck with a Red Air provider which seems to have paused and gone nowhere. Now there's the prospect of them going to Ukraine.

So, the real question here is:

For pilots receiving training on F-16s, are FA-18s "close enough" that cross-training is fairly minimal?

I like the idea of there being other FA-18s available along with F-16s. Potentially, there could be 100 or more total airframes available in reasonably short order and the total pool of trained pilots could sit in either frame.

And, also, there are the logistics of supplying parts & maintenance. There should be a large pool of scrapped or ready-to-scrapped frames from both models that can be shipped or make one last flight to be a reserve of parts for the frames that still have significant flight hours remaining.

This could be a hell of a way to leverage the total force available, if all the crossover is, say, 80% or better.

    Anyone?

There are a LOT of retired
F-18 pilots in the US/Australia/Canada/Finland. Ukies might hope to recruit foreign volunteers for what is a dead-end platform ultimately (clearly they're going forward with F-16 as their fighter)

The Mig-29A looks a lot better than the hunk of shit know as F-16s

Some of the theoretical payloads the f-18 can carry are hilarious. It can be turned into an AMRAAM spam truck with 10x AMRAAMs and 2x aim-9. Or you can take 5x 2000lb JDAMs and still carry 4 air to air missiles for defense.

Modern aircraft payloads are just ridiculous in general, an F-16 has about the same payload as a B-17.

Meanwhile the poor mig-29 weighs more than a f-16 and can only carry 2x long range r-27r.

I hope we see the Hornets being used for SEAD and DEAD missions eroding Russia's AA capability near the frontline. I'm not entirely sure which weapons are compatible with these airframes as they are because the Aussie F18s were upgraded A models but I don't know if they have the same capabilities as the C

Fricking awesome. By all accounts the Australian F/A-18s are a slam dunk for Ukraine, as they are retired and headed for the scrap heap (apparently nobody wants to buy them) and therefore available for donation, yet they still have usable lifespan on them. There's also 41 of them which is a solid number, even if a handful of them are only good for spare parts.

This reminds me of the absence of another slam dunk that I had previously thought about: why wasn't Ukraine given any of the old M198s? They're not as good as the M777s but they're still as good if not better than the old Soviet junk both sides have been fielding, and there should be some of them still kicking around somewhere. I suppose the explanation is that between all the M777s and SPGs they've been given, ammunition rather than barrels is far and away the bottleneck, not unlike the HIMARS situation.

    >INSTEAD OF SCRAPPING THEM
NATO countries/Ukraine allies are never going to scrap anything. All the surplus (especially cold-war era surplus) is going to be sent to the battlefield, even the less useful things. Every bit of weaponry is going to be tested on Russians, and the results will be observed and recorded. MIC stocks continue to go brrrr

These are old A++ models that the RAAF has since replaced with F35s. I think some C models are still in service elsewhere but the Superhornets are vastly superior. The RAAF are using Superhornets for strike roles but the legacy Hornets have been phased out.

It’s weird that super hornets are still called F-18’s when it’s completely different airframe. Especially since the sumo-16 got renamed to the F-2

The Gripen E/F is also completely different from the Gripen C/D, to the point Saab can't do an upgrade - only cannibalize the compatible parts and put them in a new build.

So I've read the Aussie hornets have the AN/APG-73 installed, how do they stack up to the APG-66(V)2's in the F-16A MLU?

Always drives me nuts seeing the west scrap perfectly good equipment. How much could it possible cost to just hide them in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere? They might rust a bit, but it's still easier to restore rusty equipment than build new shit when push comes to shove. Russia is basically surviving off their mothballed tanks right now, even if half the parts were stolen.
