Bending strength/rigidity increases exponentially with thickness. Therefore you can make a large plastic shell with sparse ribs inside that is equally strong but lighter than a thin but dense plastic body with less overall thickness but as more material. Ofc this can backfire in other ways. For example if your shell is surface is too thin it can break from a large point load even if the rigidity of the whole structure is nowhere close to being the issue.
And to add to this, this sort of thinking applies quite a lot to injection molded plastic structures because you can easily and economically make them hollow. Applies also to sheet metal products. Not as much to milled metal parts.

The barrel is not the only part of the gun that requires rigidity and strength. What part takes the load when the soldier grips the gun, throws it around, lies on top, drops it, and generally speaking abuses it? And what do you think a soldier will think of a wobbly bendy plasticky piece of shit? The gun furniture must be strong and rigid.
Fewer sharp edges means fewer snagging points. Besides, the main dimension that affects handling is the OAL anyway. The aug might seem "thinner" but the length and depth is pretty much the same as the f2000

The F2000 has an inherently wide mechanism - if you look at the internals, you'll see that it has an ejection chute in the middle and an offset gas piston, which makes for a wide gun. The only way to make it less wide would to be to stack the piston on top of the ejection chute, which means you'll have a ridiculuously tall gun with an even more ridiculuous height over bore. The Steyr is also rather wide due to its' wacky bolt carrier and offset piston. Forgot to mention that behind the magwell on the F2000 there's a space under the FCG which was originally intended to hold a targeting computer for a special grenade launcher because it was designed in the late 90s.
Yeah and where do you think the AUG's gas piston is moron? There is absolutely nothing inherently wide with the F2000. It's just a design choise.

The F2000 in particular is a closed system and needs a little more fluff to keep all the mechanisms sealed. The extra material on the magwell is part of this, which excuses the extra material on the stock. The foregrip is the only part I'd say is bulky for the sake of the aesthetic despite having little function. The optic is shaped like that to have a more stable mount on the top which is awkwardly shaped to, again, keep the system closed.
