But 8 years ago, the Ukrainian Army was the same if not worse than the Russian Army in terms of competency, corruption, etc and the current Ukrainian Army uses mostly Soviet era equipment and they do just fine
Historically and even now, Russian soldiers seem to do fine on an individual or even squad basis. They generally fight bravely, fiercely, pull off wins under harsh circumstances(say what you will about Gostomel, but the VDV did the best they could given the situation)

No, Soviet equipment is pretty bad, because as it turns out the Soviet Union fell 30 years ago and modern technology came quite far since then. It was okay-ish in it's day against peer NATO threats, even if still overmatched because the US wasn't broke like the USSR, but saying it's even decent in the modern era is cope. Fortunately, the slav slapfight has both sides using largely shitty Soviet equipment so it doesn't appear as bad because it's fighting against itself, but the absolute terror that even 30 year old NATO tech such as Javelins have proven to be on the battlefield demonstrate just how inferior Soviet, and modern Russian which is 98% Soviet with a new coat of paint, tech is.

The state of the Ukrainian military was TERRIBLE 8 years ago, which makes Russia's performance even worse, as they liked to larp as if they copuld take down all of NATO with all these marvelous wunderwaffe.
Soviet equipment isn't half bad because it was largely made/designed in Ukraine. It's generally more crude but it's cheap and easy to use so it has its advantages. Back in the 80s it could compete with Western stuff.
"Russian" equipment is made up of propaganda memes which break down on parade like the Armata.

Russians have been telling us they could march to London in a week for the last decade. Their military isn't that bad in comparison to Russia's low wealth but if they had been realistic about it's capabilities they'd catch a lot less shit. Trying to maintain soviet union era military sizes is badly harming them too, they need to trim their military and refocus it. A force with only a 200-300k troops with actual training and equipment instead of a million troops with no training and equipment from 50 years ago.
Maybe they'd actually be able to build some 5th gen aircraft if they drop the maintenance of thousands of garbage soviet aircraft too.

Maybe it's all the warcrimes and atrocities, the reports of torture, rape, and execution of civilians, the destruction of property and theft etc ?
Or maybe it's because they're fighting an illegitimate war for a corrupt state, are literally the enforcers of genocidal state policy - that might get them hated.
Then again, it might be their docile nature, the way they tolerate the abuse and extortion of training, the threat of rape as a punishment, and then settle being sent on suicide missions with poor equipment, little or no rations, and the threat of execution if they surrender or refuse - that doesn't exactly inspire respect either.
